Germany: Subsidies on hybrid vehicles to end this year, EV subsidies to be reduced

According to media reports, Germany's Economy Ministry is planning to scrap the subsidies offered on plug-in hybrid vehicles earlier than planned. Reports suggest that any and all benefits for consumers buying plug-in hybrid vehicles will be eliminated by the end of the year.

Further, the subsidies offered on electric vehicles will also be phased out slowly by 2025. The Ministry has already announced a drop in the subsidy amount for EVs from 6000 euros to 4000 euros for next year. This will further reduce to 3000 euros in 2024, before being completely removed post 2025.

The reason for removing the subsidies is to focus more on climate protection. Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated that plug-in hybrids have become marketable and no longer need public funding. The ruling coalition in Germany stated that from next year, the government will only provide support for hybrid cars that are considered to have a "positive impact on the climate", before halting subsidies entirely by the end of 2025.
