ANCAP: Vehicle submergence test to be part of safety assessment from 2023

The Australian Independent Crash Testing authority (ANCAP) is said to introduce vehicle submergence testing from January 2023. The new criteria will be an extension to ANCAP's current rescue protocols, which assess vehicle accessibility after a crash.

Vehicle manufacturers will now have to provide evidence that passengers will be able to open doors & operate electric windows for up to 10 minutes after a vehicle has been submerged in water. This is to allow occupants to exit the vehicle safely.

If the windows or doors don't open, automakers are also required to provide a method which will allow occupants to safely break open the side window for escape. This information should be mentioned in the owner's manual.

The vehicle submergence testing will be part of ANCAP's Adult Occupant Protection Assessment area. The testing authority will also introduce new aspects in these tests to assess child presence detection systems. These systems will monitor the rear seats and doors to notify the driver or the emergency services if a child has been left in a locked car. The notifications will be indicated through visual and audible alerts, either via honking or by sending an alert to an app on the driver's phone.

Wow! This is something innovative!! Something that we thought we never wanted but could prove to be very helpful. Every Crash testing agency should include this in their tests, after all there are a lot of accidents happening nowadays where people lose their lives by getting stuck in their car submerged inside water.
Good Job ANCAP!

Wow this is amazing, never even thought of something. Bharat NCAP should take notes. I'd suggest BNCAP to also add the cost of repair from OEM after crash tests.

Good move, simultaneously testing water wading capacity would have been good to have to verify the figures given by manufacturers that we have to take at face value.

Re: ANCAP: Vehicle submergence test to be part of safety assessment from 2023

Chinese NIO EL7 SUV and ET5 sedan first to achieve five-star safety ratings against Euro NCAP's ever-demanding 2023 assessment criteria.

NIO sets the bar high in Euro NCAP’s newly updated 2023 safety tests - Euro NCAP

Quote:
In 2023, the safety testing protocol has been updated to include new systems in child presence detection, specifications for vehicle submergence as well as the latest technologies that detect - and respond - to motorcyclists and vulnerable road users. To achieve Euro NCAP’s five-star rating in 2023, manufacturers must now meet the exacting targets of this updated test protocol. Today, Euro NCAP announces that the first vehicles to achieve five stars are two cars from Chinese manufacturer NIO and new to the European market: the Large Family car ET5 and the Large SUV EL7.
Quote:
Both vehicles from this Chinese brand display good levels of passive safety with good protection offered for the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger as well as occupants of different sizes sitting in different positions within the car.

NIO ET5 and EL7 were the first vehicles in undertaking the brand-new Euro NCAP Active Safety scenarios, introduced in 2023: Car-to-Motorcycle, Car-to-Car Crossing, Car-to-Car Head-on, Dooring, and Driver State Monitoring.
Quote:
Both cars also have an advanced eCall system, which alerts the emergency services in the event of a crash. The car also has a system which applies the brakes after an impact, to avoid secondary collisions. NIO also demonstrated that, if either of the vehicles entered the water, the doors, and windows would remain functional long enough to allow the occupants to escape.

Safety technologies are becoming complex, yet I want to reassure consumers that Euro NCAP will continue to anticipate and adapt to changes in our rating scheme, challenging vehicle manufacturers to ensure drivers – and the road users they interact with – are offered the safest possible vehicles.

Re: ANCAP: Vehicle submergence test to be part of safety assessment from 2023

ANCAP awards first five-star safety rating under new-for-2023 criteria.

The Lexus RZ electric SUV has become the first vehicle to be tested under ANCAP’s new assessment criteria, which will be used to test vehicles coming to Australia across the next three years.

The Austalasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has given the Lexus RZ electric car a five-star safety rating, the first to be issued under the organisation’s new 2023-2025 test criteria.

2023-2025 ANCAP criteria changes:

Higher points for vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility (was four, now eight)
Reduced tolerance for front and rear occupant chest injuries
AEB tests now include motorcycle detection (stationary, approaching from behind and from the side through intersections)
Cyclist anti-dooring functions now tested to reduce head injuries
In-cabin systems now tested to detect children left behind in cars
AEB reversing towards child detection
Cars will be tested to see whether their doors are able to be opened without battery power, and electric windows remain functional and able to be opened for up to 10 minutes after being submerged
Driver monitoring systems which detect eye movement now tested
Vulnerable Road User Protection threshold increased from 60 per cent to 70 per cent for a five-star rating
