Honda may continue producing internal combustion engines until 2040

According to a media report, Honda has stated that they could continue offering internal combustion engines until 2040.

In a recent interview Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda, stated that the company is running feasibility studies on future technologies. Honda is said to be conducting research to look at alternative power sources for vehicles, with internal combustion engines being one of them. The company stated that low-carbon synthetic fuels could help keep IC engines for a longer period, especially in high-performance cars, trucks and aeroplanes.

Having said that, Honda also confirmed that they are focussed on electrification and fuel cell technology for the future. The company has committed $40 billion to develop hybrid and fully-electric technologies, which it hopes will contribute to 40% of the brand's sales by 2030. Honda's first EVs underpinned by a dedicated platform are expected to enter the US market sometime in 2026. Prior to that, the carmaker will introduce 2 electric crossovers based on GM's Ultium platform in 2024.

Honda is also said to establish a standalone business next month, to develop its battery business. This, reports suggest, could eventually include developing an EV*infrastructure.

Re: Honda may continue producing internal combustion engines until 2040

For context, Honda is the world's largest internal combustion engine (ICE) manufacturer when we add things like lawnmowers, boats, motorcycles, and cars. That's several million each year. So the use case for Honda's ICE does exist beyond this decade.

IMHO the Japanese make the most efficient and reliable internal combustion engines and it truly will be the end of an era when the world doesn't need their ICE anymore.

It will be the end of Japanese manufacturing, as we know it. Already the Koreans and even the Chinese has gone past them in electronics. Chinese have a massive head start in the EV space. All legacy engine makers have to evolve, else they risk going the Kodak way.

Even today cars are bought not just based on engine alone. Except for few cars, most dont really standout in terms of drivetrains.

So I dont agree that Chinese and Koreans will leapfrog the Japanese. Hardware wise the Japanese have always been good and will continue to do so once they have their own electric ones.

Re: Honda may continue producing internal combustion engines until 2040

2024 - 2 Electric crossovers with GM platform
2026 - Dedicated EV platform for American market
2030 - 40% of sales is Hybrid and EVs. It is pathetic that Japanese OEMs put hybrid in front as their electrified powertrain and EVs second. Rest 60% stick to ICE engine? I guess the 40billion USD probably goes more to hybrids, synthetic fuel ICEs than to EVs.
2040 - Will Honda exist? May be! May be not as a car company! If Toyota bites the dust first, Honda is the second in line.

Re: Honda may continue producing internal combustion engines until 2040

Honda hasn't been able to gain a foothold in the rapidly expanding EV market. Their tie-up with Sony, the borrowing of platform from GM, and their current lacklustre EV products on ground all point in a very wrong direction.

In the words of Shri. Russell Peters - 'Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad'.

The ICE will exist till the time 'entry level' segment exists. Else OEMs can go the FoMoCo way and do away with it and focus only on UVs/EVs, which was bold but worked for them.

Call me old school, but I will definitely own an Hybrid-ICE/HCCI car till it is available. Hopefully one from Mazda in the future.
