China becomes the world's largest exporter of automobiles in Q1 2023; Overtakes Japan

China has become the world's largest exporter of automobiles in the first quarter of 2023.

According to reports, China took the title from Japan after its export market registered a 58% growth in Q1 2023 compared to the same period last year. Japan lost the top spot despite registering a 6 per cent growth in Q1 2023.

Reports state that the growth of China's export market can be credited to its rising electric vehicle sales and its ability to continue dealing with Russia.

China managed to export 1.07 million vehicles between January & March 2023, while Japan's export numbers stood at 950,000 units. China's EVs accounted for 40% of all its exports, with 380,000 units of export. Reports state that Belgium, Australia and Thailand are the top-3 export markets for China.

Having said that, reports also state that China's export numbers aren't exclusively driven by its domestic automakers. Instead, it is supported by the American EV brand, Tesla; which builds its cars in Shanghai and exports them to other countries, including Canada.

Well it can be expected, none of the Big Three from Japan have introduced any EV. Be it Honda, Toyota or Suzuki. They are firmly sticking to ICE or alternatives. But they don’t have a single product for someone looking for a proper EV. Only Koreans and Chinese are providing build to bone EVs in India. And world is making a push for EV. Had Japanese even a single product under their belt, we would be looking at a completely different picture.

In fact Tesla proposed to import CBU's from China to India to retail, rather than manufacture these here, but the government took a strong stand by disallowing these.

At least Japan and S.Korea in the overall scenario, maintain unimpeachable quality control (a few misses always expected) for their products. But I would pity the buyers of some dubious Chinese ICE and EV brands who would realise their costly mistakes maybe sometime sooner or later. They have a price advantage as always.

China was very late to the car manufacturing game. They realised that the petrol & diesel games have already been won by other countries. To catch up - and beat the world - they bet the house on electric cars! And boy, have they succeeded. Just like for electronics & many other product categories (e.g. smartphones), they are slowly becoming the world's supplier of EVs & EV components.

There is really no EV today without significant sourcing from China. Including cars like the Tata Nexon.

I wonder why we think this? Do Chinese customers not seek quality and reliability as much as we do? If we trust Tata and Mahindra to iron out the bugs in their cars within a year or two of launch, why do we think Chinese companies can't do it? These Chinese companies make and sell orders-of-magnitude more cars than Indian companies, not just in their country, but around the world. Ignoring quality and reliability isn't the greatest business strategy and I am sure a Chinese auto executive can figure that out just as well as an Indian executive

Absolutely. In fact they do a lot of double speak, and cast doubts on the possibility of the world switching to full EVs. Calling their hybrid cars - EVs with unlimited range, saying hydrogen is the future, plug-in hybrid is the solution, etc. All this while it know very well how much people wanted cars like the Rav4 EV with Tesla drive train.
