EPA: Hyundai is the most fuel-efficient legacy automaker, followed by Honda & Kia

According to the latest Automotive Trends Report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), new vehicles had the biggest improvement over the last nine years when it comes to improved fuel efficiency & reducing CO2 emissions. The 2023 report states that new vehicles reached record low carbon dioxide emissions and record high fuel efficiency, on average.

As per the reports, Tesla is at the top of the rankings when it comes to fuel economy & CO2 emissions - thanks to its entire portfolio consisting of zero-emission vehicles.

In second place, however, is Hyundai, which is committed to expanding its battery-powered portfolio in the coming years and whose EVs have been performing well in terms of sales. The EPA report states that for the 2022 Model Year, Hyundai vehicle's average real-world fuel efficiency was 29.1 mpg while CO2 emissions were 302 g/mile. This is a significant improvement from its 2017 numbers of 28.6 mpg fuel economy and 311 g/mile CO2 emissions average.

Third in the list and second best among the legacy carmakers was Honda, despite its 2022 model year's average fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures being worse than that in 2017. Fuel efficiency figures dropped from 29.4 mpg to 28.7 mpg, while CO2 emissions increased from 302 g/mile to 309 g/mile.

Kia was the fourth best in the list after Tesla, Hyundai & Honda. The Korean carmaker's average fuel efficiency figure improved from 27.1 mpg in 2017 to 28.6 mpg in 2022. Kia vehicles also reduced their CO2 emissions drastically, dropping from 327 g/mile to 306 g/mile.

Having said that, the biggest improvement was recorded by Toyota. The carmaker's average real-world fuel efficiency went up from 25.3 mpg to 27.8 mpg, while its CO2 emissions dropped from 352 g/mile to 319 g/mile.

Toyota marks the biggest improvement in real-world fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, that too without presence of any proper EV in its portfolio, this could be a testament to the effectiveness of strong hybrids, PHEVs, and FCEVs in emission reduction and enhanced fuel efficiency.

I see this very clear order.

Quote:
Korean/Japan -> German -> American
Looks like the country's policies play a major role in reducing emission. I wonder where we would have Tata, Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki.

Lately, each time these type of surveys come out and I fail to comprehend their utility. Just like I fail to comprehend why Tesla should even be considered in the same category as a Honda given that they have zero IC vehicles! And these reports are very much the Americas centric, what implications do they have in the Indian/Rest of the world context? Seriously speaking, the avg efficiency figures of Hyundai or others are not at all awe inspiring once you convert from imperial to metric. I mean the cars from the same brand plying in India are more fuel efficient. So IMHO, these type of surveys should either be taken with a pinch of
salt or entirely ignored for the better.

To me Honda being in the 2nd place without an EV offering is the most impressive feet. Speaks to the engineering and efficiency of their ICE cars

Hyundai has launched a series of EVs and Hybrids by 2022 (Kona, Ioniq, Sonata Hybrid, Elantra Hybrid etc.) which improves the overall portfolio efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions.

Toyota has hybrid variants for all it offerings in US thus gaining the most improvement, Honda has much smaller hybrid portfolio.

Increasing size of cars explains the reduction in efficiency for Honda.
