EPA: Hyundai is the most fuel-efficient legacy automaker, followed by Honda & Kia According to the latest Automotive Trends Report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), new vehicles had the biggest improvement over the last nine years when it comes to improved fuel efficiency & reducing CO2 emissions. The 2023 report states that new vehicles reached record low carbon dioxide emissions and record high fuel efficiency, on average.
As per the reports, Tesla is at the top of the rankings when it comes to fuel economy & CO2 emissions - thanks to its entire portfolio consisting of zero-emission vehicles.
In second place, however, is Hyundai, which is committed to expanding its battery-powered portfolio in the coming years and whose EVs have been performing well in terms of sales. The EPA report states that for the 2022 Model Year, Hyundai vehicle's average real-world fuel efficiency was 29.1 mpg while CO2 emissions were 302 g/mile. This is a significant improvement from its 2017 numbers of 28.6 mpg fuel economy and 311 g/mile CO2 emissions average.
Third in the list and second best among the legacy carmakers was Honda, despite its 2022 model year's average fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures being worse than that in 2017. Fuel efficiency figures dropped from 29.4 mpg to 28.7 mpg, while CO2 emissions increased from 302 g/mile to 309 g/mile.
Kia was the fourth best in the list after Tesla, Hyundai & Honda. The Korean carmaker's average fuel efficiency figure improved from 27.1 mpg in 2017 to 28.6 mpg in 2022. Kia vehicles also reduced their CO2 emissions drastically, dropping from 327 g/mile to 306 g/mile.
Having said that, the biggest improvement was recorded by Toyota. The carmaker's average real-world fuel efficiency went up from 25.3 mpg to 27.8 mpg, while its CO2 emissions dropped from 352 g/mile to 319 g/mile.
