Toyota is the best-selling automaker in the world in 2023

Toyota keeps crown as world's top-selling automaker in 2023.

For the fourth year in a row, Toyota is the best-selling automaker in the world.

With a record-breaking 11,233,039 vehicles shipped last year, an increase of 7.2 percent year-over-year, Toyota is the best-selling automaker for the fourth year in a row.

Volkswagen Group announced it sold 9.24 million cars.
Quote:
The Hyundai/Kia/Genesis trio posted total sales of 7.32 million vehicles (+6.7 percent increase) to claim the last spot on the podium. General Motors has yet to publish global sales figures for the previous year, but we'll remind you that it shipped 5.93 million cars in 2022. Stellantis will publish data for the year that just ended on February 15, and in the meantime, it's worth mentioning deliveries stood at 5.84 million vehicles in 2022.
Gasoline-electric hybrids made up about a third of those. Battery electric vehicles accounted for less than 1%.

Quote:
A closer look at the numbers shows the Toyota and Lexus brands delivered 10,307,395 cars in 2023, or 7.7 percent more than the year before and a new record.
The Daihatsu subsidiary also posted solid results as shipments grew by 3.2 percent to 790,441 units. The last 12 months haven't been kind to the Hino division in charge of commercial vehicles as sales declined by 9.8 percent to 135,203 units.

Sales outside of Japan reached an all-time high last year when Toyota and its subsidiaries shipped 8,928,230 cars, an increase of 4.1 percent compared to the previous year. The main Toyota and Lexus brands accounted for the bulk of the sales, with 8,634,425 cars, up by 4.3 percent over 2022 to set yet another record. The United States was the biggest single market with 2,617,033 cars, or 7 percent more than the year before.

Toyota's luxury division Lexus achieved record sales in 2023 after shipping 824,258 cars – a whopping 132-percent jump compared to 2022. North America was by far the biggest region with 355,606 units (+124 percent), followed by Asia with 236,587 units (+113 percent) and domestic market Japan with 94,647 units (+229 percent).

Re: Toyota is the best-selling automaker in the world in 2023

Electric cars were just 0.92 percent of Toyota sales in 2023.

2023 was a record year for Toyota but electric vehicles had little to do with it

Out of a total of 11,233,039 cars sold by Toyota and its subsidiaries, few of them did away with the internal combustion engine. Deliveries of battery electric vehicles amounted to 104,018 units. Yes, it was a 325.2 percent growth year-over-year but is due to comparing to a low baseline number, percentages can be deceiving.
Quote:
There are a bunch of electric cars on the way for the "Beyond Zero" (bZ) lineup, but the company estimates battery powered EVs will always remain a minority. Even after Toyota will have diversified its electric lineup, battery EVs are estimated to account for just 30 percent of sales.
Quote:
The Volkswagen Group, Toyota's main rival, once again had to settle for second place in 2023 when total deliveries rose by 12 percent to 9.24 million. However, the German automotive conglomerate sold far more EVs in the last 12 months than Toyota as shipments of zero-emission vehicles reached approximately 770,000 units, up by 35 percent YoY. The share of electric cars climbed to 8.3 percent, an increase of 1.4 percent from the year before.

With less than 1% of those being BEV, it's certain that Toyota sees something that everyone thinks they don't.

A 7.2% growth without EVs contributing to it is why Toyota is going slow but steady (?) on EVs. It will take years to dent sales and go in other direction. I will wait for them until they come with solid state batteries

The world's top 30 best-selling carmakers in 2023.

The infographic shows not only the volume but also the percentage of electric vehicles sold within each OEM's total.

Re: Toyota is the best-selling automaker in the world in 2023

Fascinating data. These are gross numbers, ie, company dispatches to dealers. Not actual retail sales.

How are numbers for cross badged vehicles counted? For instance, Rumion and Taisor are technically Toyota vehicles but made in a Maruti Suzuki factory. Invicto is a Maruti vehicle but is made in a Toyota factory. What’s the protocol here?

Great to see Tata Motors numbers, they are about par with Mazda as well as Chinese giants SAIC and GWM. I suppose these will be PV sales of Tata Motors + JLR, with no trucks, buses and LCVs counted. Amazing performance from the company which not long back many feared might be shut down entirely.

Look at the number of Chinese conglomerates on the list. They are all fully or partially state owned. Goes to show what state owned enterprise can do with it is properly supported and well managed. The Chinese ‘invest’ in their state owned companies, we ‘disinvest’ them.

I can't agree with you more on this one. I think I am on the same side of the fence as you are. Since political discussions are not exactly welcome on this forum, I will say no more.

Re: Toyota is the best-selling automaker in the world in 2023

Toyota reports record-setting annual sales of 10.3 million vehicles.

The Japanese car giant has set the record for the most sales in a year by any single car brand.

Note that the Japanese financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March.

Quote:
Japanese car giant Toyota has reported a record 10.31 million vehicle sales (10,309,457) for the 2024 Japanese fiscal year, the most annual sales from any one car brand ever.

The result, surpassing the 10 million unit mark in a financial year for the first time on record, is an increase of 7.3 per cent on Toyota's FY23 sales result.

The figures (which include Lexus models) note that 85.16 per cent of sales are from countries outside Japan, with a staggering 1,529,818 Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold in the brand's home nation alone.
Of the 8.8m sales in other markets, North America accounts for 31.1 per cent whereas the rest of Asia (including China) reports 37.6 per cent of Toyota's global result.

Despite being the top-selling brand with a significant margin, Australia's 246,396 sales are a paltry 2.8 per cent of the total FY24 result.

Sales of hybrid vehicles accounted for 33.2 per cent of the total.

Toyota vehicles still remain in high demand globally, with data supplied by Toyota also showing that production of Toyota vehicles is now less than the annual sales volume, with FY24 reporting that 9.98 million vehicles were built, 96.7 per cent of the volume of cars sold.
