Mercedes EVs to lose their pebble-shaped design; Will also revert to traditional nomenclature

According to media reports, the electric vehicle lineup of Mercedes-Benz could soon lose the egg-shaped aerodynamic design seen on the likes of the EQS and EQE.

Christoph Starzynski, VP of Car Engineering, Mercedes-Benz suggested that future EVs from the brand will look less like the EQS and more like the recently unveiled CLA concept, which features a prominent grille and an almost traditional three-box styling.

Christoph, stated, "We have had that comment, and we are taking this comment seriously. Looking at the [design] language in the Concept CLA, and maybe looking a little bit more in the future, I think we can definitely see there's going to be adoptions to that."

The automaker is also said to be changing the nomenclature of its EVs. Reports suggest that as the company shifts to being an EV-only brand, the 'EQ' tag won't be required. This means that future electric vehicles could get back to using the traditional name (C, E, S and G) for their size and segment.

Talking about the names, Christoph stated, "No, it's going to be a ‘C’. ‘EQ’ is for us a very strong brand for electric technology, so we will definitely maintain it. Now the question is nomenclature. How do you name the cars? At the end of the day, our ultimate goal is to go fully electric. So at the end of the day, the zipper will close and the nomenclature will happen naturally."

He even hinted that the first car to have a badging switch could be the electric version of the G-Class.

This is such a welcome move. The Merc EVs are so well loaded and high tech but IMO has had a very “beta” design language with too much curve. Good to see that they are heading in the right direction and bidding adeu to the “fluidic” design language

Hallelujah, thank heavens!

I saw an EQS recently and it's hard to think that this is the electric equivalent of an S class! BMW did this well, the i7 looks a lot more classy than the EQS though I would still prefer the S-class design over either.

Re: Mercedes EVs to lose their pebble-shaped design; Will also revert to traditional nomenclature

Happened to see two last week near Sholinganallur signal, Chennai. The cars were stuck in traffic for some 5 minutes and everyone around the cars recognized it. It felt like a show and everyone around was discussing about it. Afterall what are the chances of sighting two Mercedes EQS 580 together . The design is good IMO, nothing to complain.
