BYD will soon be expanding its product lineup with its first pickup truck.

The new BYD pickup truck is yet to be named, but it's reportedly aimed as a direct rival to the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux. Now, ahead of its global unveil, the pickup truck has been spotted undergoing testing in Mexico.



In the spy images, the BYD pickup truck can be seen without any camouflage, revealing most of its exterior design & styling details. This includes the massive BYD logo on the grille, flanked by C-shaped LED headlights on either end connected by a DRL bar. The rear also gets C-shaped LED lights connected by a light bar. Other details include large wheel arches with plastic cladding, a side step, usable roof rails, a roll cage and a medium-sized cargo bed.



While pictures of the interiors are not available, reports suggest that the pickup truck could get a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system as seen on the Seal sedan, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.



BYD could offer the pickup truck with both plug-in hybrid and electric powertrain options. Technical details, though, will be revealed closer to its launch, which is expected sometime later this year.

For a second, I thought someone had stuck a BYD badge on a Ford F150. Styling is clearly ‘inspired’ by the Yanks, and the vehicle looks the part. Certainly a lot more normal and handsome than the wacky Cybertruck.

With not many trucks in EV category, they seemed to have found it difficult to get inspired as they have in cars
So they have gone for the American truck inspiration. Disappointed that they couldn't build a good EV kind of clean design.

BYD Shark: plug-in hybrid pickup is unveiled to change concepts.

The Chinese brand's first medium pickup will be hybrid and promises more than 840 km of autonomy.







Despite being a competitor to the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet S10, the BYD Shark is slightly larger, measuring 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, 1,925 mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. That is, it is 132 mm longer, 71 mm wider, 110 mm taller and with 175 mm more wheelbase than the Hilux. The bucket has a load capacity of 835 kg or 1,450 liters.

it has a plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with two electric ones, one on each axle, to deliver more than 430 hp of power.

the pickup accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and will have a range of 840 km by the NEDC test cycle. Using only the battery charge, you will be able to drive for 100 km. To reach this range number, BYD claims that the pickup uses the electric motor 80% of the time, reaching a consumption of 13.3 km/liter.

Woah. Apart from the very apparent inspiration from the Ford F150 Lightning, the front end also reminds me of Mahindra’s future EVs. Nowadays it is difficult to say who is inspired by who!

I hope this Shark doesn’t Tank in India or anywhere else

Well, I wont blame BYD entirely. It IS very difficult to find an original design from Chinese manufacturer. When I last went to Shenzhen recently I got a first hand view of their domestic cars. Apart from hundreds of unknow brand one thing that specially caught my/our attention is that the cars whose design is not copied/heavily inspired looks outright horrendous (looks are subjective). In this if they started selling their unique design then it is highly unlikely that they will even reach 20% of their current sales figure.

Looks great to me. Specs sound even better. I would love to buy one if they brought it to India.

- For a PHEV, a claimed 100km on electric only is fabulous.

- Approximately 13kmpl on petrol

- About 700bhp and 760 NM

Only thing that goes against is the size. It's slightly longer than Toyota Hilux, which itself is very very large. Our narrow congested roads, zero parking, endless traffic jams etc... uff.
