Porsche ending production of ICE powered Boxster & Cayman
Porsche is all set to pull the the plug on the ICE-powered 718 Boxster and the Cayman. The two sportscars were anyway discontinued from Europe last year due to stricter cybersecurity regulations. They will now be discontinued in the rest of the world later this year.
Porsche Cars North America’s head of Product Communications, Frank Wiesmann, said that the fourth-generation Boxster and Cayman (982 series) have entered their final months of production. The last units are scheduled to be built in October.
2024 marked the final full year of production for both models, with sales rising 15 percent to 23,670 units. In the first quarter of 2025, shipments fell 22 percent to 4,498 vehicles, given that the cars were discontinued in Europe. However, Boxster RS Spyder and Cayman GT4 RS sales continued in those regions as they were exempt from rules due to their limited production run.
The replacements for these two iconic models are still some time away, as the electric Boxster and Cayman are still under development. CEO Oliver Blume said the electric sports cars will arrive in the “medium term.” He added that both will be “even more dynamic, even more powerful, with a pure driving experience.”
Porsche recently admitted that its initial target of having EVs account for 80 percent of annual sales by 2030 is no longer feasible. Porsche is re-engineering the twin-turbo V8 to comply with Euro 7 emission norms and will continue into the next decade. The Cayenne will sell alongside its EV sibling and the Panamera will continue with ICE engines well into the 2030s. The first-gen ICE Macan will be discontinued in 2026, leaving only the second-gen Macan EV on sale. However, Porsche is exploring an all-new crossover to replace the original Macan.
Additionally, Porsche is considering adding combustion engines to vehicles initially intended to be fully electric. Last November, the company’s former Chief Financial Officer, Lutz Meschke said, “We are currently looking at the possibility of the originally planned all-electric vehicles having a hybrid drive or a combustion engine.”
