Mazda Furai - The Sound of Wind

The Mazda Furai has been unveiled at the Detroit auto show. The Mazda Furai is the latest image of the NAGARE design concept that has been influencing the latest models of the Japanese car manufacturer. The Mazda Furai is powered by a 450 hp RENESIS-based R20B three-rotor rotary engine.

The Sound of Wind

I've always been a Mazda fan and i've been interested and impressed with their Nagare concepts ever since they started coming out. The Mazda Furai, is the still continuing story of an underdog fighting to become reality.

"This is a living, breathing machine, with a language that's perfectly functional"
Watch the video to see the piece of dark art that is the Furai, make as much as 450 BHP from a 2 Litre rotary. Feel the termors as it revs past what i think is easily 10,000 RPM.
It sounds so awesome that i think i had a small orgasm in my pants.

If it looks good here on the page, the Furai in the flesh is truly awesome. Most car designers stress the importance of discipline, but this thing stretches the rules to breaking-point. Head-on, it looks spectacular, morphing the established 'Nagare' elements - the five-point grille, expressive lights, flowing front wings - into something that's pure, predatory endurance racer. The ribbed, sculpted body-sides swell and flow into a faintly terrifying rear end. The rotary engine sits very low in the chassis, promoting a useful centre of gravity, and the engine cover looks as though it's been slashed to ribbons.

Without the wings, the drag factor is an impressive 0.36; with them, it's 0.5.

While i know this isn't by any means recent news, i just came across the video and i felt i MUST share it. You would say, looking at my new avatar that i am clearly obsessed with this thing, and you would be right.

So, could it happen for real? A rotary-powered Mazda supercar? A full-on Le Mans campaign with the Furai to the fore?

"Oh I hope so" says an impassioned van den Acker(Mazda designer). "As far as 'Nagare' goes, well I can feel the hot breath of our competitors on my neck. We've captured something really distinctive here, and we'd be nuts not to do something with it. My message to anyone who says it could never be real? Please, just keep on thinking that."

Furai means 'sound of wind', by the way.

Looks way too futuristic, something like a stealth aircraft.

Awesome video.

With a car that is street legal yet so very close to the track , the designing is welcome, especially when functional. Thats the whole idea anyway, it's supposed to look outrageous, in your face.
All im saying is, if it performs close to a Gumpert Apollo(the only similar car i could think of), looks and sounds like it does, woudn't you pic it over the former?

Btw, check the porsche that's filming the video trying to keep up with it!

I saw the concept in person at the Detroit Auto Show this year and must say that it was the best looking vehicle in the show, along with the Lincoln concepts.

And the high revving rotary engine makes it sound like a GP2 or Formula One race car.

What else do you need?

My goodness!! What a mean looking car and the sound is to die for. I have become a fan of Mazda after I bought my Mazda 3. The car never fails to put a smile on my face.

Would love to see the Furai in person. Wonder why Mazda makes fantastic cars but are never pronounced in the same breath as Honda or Toyota. They sure need to do some catching up.
