2009 Nissan GTR - Present and Future. EDIT: Spec-V launch date & pricing confirmed-nissan_gtr_meter_lq.jpg

The Nissan GTR has been in the news obsessively since its launch at the end of 2007. Possibly the most talked about, loved AND hated car in recent times.
And now, in the news again:-

1) Nissan GT-R named Car of the Year by Automobile Mag
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AUTOMOBILE Magazine, America's leading automotive lifestyle publication and part of Source Interlink Media, LLC, a subsidiary of media and marketing services company Source Interlink Companies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SORC), announced today that the Nissan GT-R is the 2009 Automobile of the Year.

The much anticipated Nissan GT-R is the first Japanese supercar to seriously threaten the reigning opposition, many of whom the GT-R bested on Germany's renowned Nurburgring. Editors noted that while the Nissan GT-R rides like a subway car, sounds like an appliance and weighs a ton, it still deserved to be named Automobile of the Year for delivering high-intensity fun and astonishing performance.

'For decades, previous versions of the GT-R were never exported to the United States. Now we know what we've been missing, and are we happy to be invited to the party,' said Jean Jennings, president and editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine. 'What we love about the GT-R is that it refuses to compromise. It is not comfortable, it is not trying to make friends and it is not trying to influence people. It exists for one reason only ' to go fast ' and it does.'

In awarding the GT-R its ultimate prize, AUTOMOBILE Magazine editors cited the car's 'neck-snapping acceleration,' 'super-accurate steering' and 'incredible value' by supercar standards.

Practically speaking, when Nissan launched the car, it had a tall order to achieve, which was benchmarking the 911 turbo and exceeding it in performance, now though, detroit has turned up the heat with the blistering Corvette ZR1 and the savage, fire-breathing Dodge Viper ACR.

And once again, the V-Spec has a mountain to climb.
What do you guys think? What does the future hold for Nissan's supercar? Will it inspire shock and awe again? Or will it get buried under the hype?

Nissan GT-R crowned Motor Trend Car of the Year

"Not only has the Nissan GT-R won just about every comparison test on the planet, but it's also racked up a Popular Science Best of What's New award, Car of the Year honors from Automobile Magazine, and now the GT-R can add Motor Trend's CotY trophy to its mantle, as well. Calling it simply "Ichiban", the MT team praised Nissan's supercar-for-the-people as a standout in a pretty deep pool of contenders...."

I SOOOOO LOVE this car and i really wish i had one. It was a good informative read though.

nissan is marketing it as super car that can be driven to work. I dont think it is a good strategy. who would want to use a $78 K car as daily beater?

Power Enterprises developing Nissan GT-R twin-charger system

2009 Nissan GTR - Present and Future. EDIT: Spec-V launch date & pricing confirmed-gtrenginebay.jpg

"If the Nissan GT-R's 478 horsepower twin-turbo engine isn't powerful enough for you, the tuners at Power Enterprises has some hardware to put Godzilla over the top. PE has two kits available and a third coming to the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. The 35GTR 560 (as in 560 hp) kit features a PE P-Map ECU, PWR Air Impulse II air filters and an upgraded intake kit. The 35GTR 600 kit has the above upgrades, plus upgraded wastegate actuators and a Supersonic Titanium 89 mm exhaust.

For those among the GT-R crowd that could simply never have enough power, Power Enterprises is also working on a twin-charger setup that adds twin superchargers to the mix. the Four Charger System adds a pair of Rotrex C30-94 superchargers to bump the power quotient to 650 ponies. More importantly, the superchargers should provide nearly limitless mid-range torque, making turbo lag a non-issue. We're guessing track day would be a hell of a lot of fun with that setup, and we'd imagine that a twin-turbo, twin-supercharged GT-R would sound something like Doc's time-traveling locomotive from Back to the Future. We'll be on the lookout for more twin-charger details closer to the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 9."

I would pay money to listen to what that sounds like! :Shockked:

Developed around the multi-dimensional Nissan GT-R sports car, which was introduced just more than one year ago to universal global acclaim, the new SpecV model builds on the original's "ultimate supercar that anyone can enjoy driving anywhere, at anytime" philosophy - taking it to an entirely new level of "oneness between man and machine."

"After nearly a year of speculation and spy shots, it's official: the Nissan GT-R SpecV has arrived. The limited edition GT-R is a subtle evolution of the super coupe that's set the world on fire after its introduction last year, and Nissan claims that it offers race car-levels of performance in a street-legal vehicle."

2009 Nissan GTR - Present and Future. EDIT: Spec-V launch date & pricing confirmed-02_nissan_gtr_specv.jpg

"The body mods consist of a carbon fiber rear spoiler, grille and brake ducts, along with an exclusive Ultimate Black Opal paint job. On the inside, a set of carbon fiber Recaro buckets are fitted up front, while the rear seats have been nixed to save a few pounds. Carbon fiber also adorns the center storage box, instrument panel and replaces the majority of the interior trim."

Peak output remains the same, at 478 horsepower, but a switch on the right of the steering wheel (shared with the cruise control) activates an electronic circuit to boost mid-range torque by 15 lb-ft (up to 449 lb-ft). A green light illuminates on the dash when the overboost function is enabled, giving drivers 80 seconds to perform any overtaking maneuvers, and then defaulting back to the standard setting. (see pic below)

"...new high gear boost controller that increases the amount of compressed oxygen entering the twin-turbo'd 3.8-liter V6 to deliver more torque in mid- to high-range revs. A titanium-coated exhaust and a reworked suspension is fitted underneath, and carbon ceramic brakes hide behind 20-inch NISMO wheels that conspire to reduce unsprung mass and improve braking performance."

The SpecV's carbon ceramic brakes were developed in conjunction with Brembo and are painted silver to differentiate the upgraded stoppers from the standard GT-R. Although the six-piston (front) caliper size remains the same, the discs have been upgraded to 390mm (15.35 inches) and fitted with SpecV specific brake pads. Nissan claims a weight savings of 11 pounds per corner and –2.0 Gs worth of stopping power, but the system comes at a cost: $45,000.

The 20-inch RAYS forged aluminum wheels – the same units offered on the NISMO Clubsports GT-R -- also contribute to the overall weight savings, which comes in 132 pounds lighter than the standard model.

As mentioned, Nissan replaced several components with lightweight carbon fiber, including the seats, interior trim (even the seat-back adjuster), grille and brake ducts, along with the trick dry carbon fiber rear wing (coated in clear matte paint) that increases downforce. The Bilsteins have been retuned to be more responsive on the racetrack and the engine cover has been replaced with a SpecV-only piece. The standard GT-R hues are available, but if you want to stand out, the Ultimate Opal Black paint job will set you back an additional $6,100.

I somehow like the regular GTR exhausts. They look more aggressive and brutal.

The 80 sec overboost function is probably the coolest thing I'll ever see in this lifetime. All hail Godzilla!

to a Novice, the boost function would sound like a virtual NOS system.

@dipen- Yes it does, just like in the NFS game, Magical NOS that regenerates itself:)
Anyways, its the same thing- more oxygen for a short period at the flick of a switch, while a cool light glows on the dashboard, and you can do it as many times as you want, the "cylinder" will always be full

Whats the Black Opal paint job all about! I was somehow feeling inclined towards GTR when it was 69K but now they have increased the price to 79K in US, maybe bcos of the high demand and limited production. This is getting closer to Porche 911 which is around 80-85K decently loaded.

I think we may have a new king of the ring!Wowie! This car is so damn cool.I too somehow dislike the design of the exhaust tip.
