BMW M7 Spy Photos Caught for First Time?

After a couple of near-misses WCF can finally reveal the first spy pictures of the upcoming BMW M7... or whatever BMW decides to call it. Looking like the sportiest non-Alpina 7 Series variant to date, telltale details include the power bulge on the bonnet similar to the one found on the M3, an aggressively styled pseudo M-style front bumper with gaping air intakes plus sport wheels with huge brakes just beneath. Since the camouflage is so minimal hopefully the car will not stay such a big secret for much longer.

If in fact the M7, it will represent the ultimate BMW super saloon. It will target cars like the Mercedes-Benz duo, the S63 AMG and the S65 AMG, as well as the upcoming Jaguar XJR. Currently the most powerful 7 Series in the lot is the twin turbo 760i which has a 6.0-litre V12 engine. Maximum power is rated at 400kW (544hp) and peak torque is 750Nm made between 1,500rpm and 5,000rpm.

The assumption is that the M7 will eclipse these figures but whether it goes beyond the 450kW (612hp) made by the S65 AMG remains to be officially confirmed. What we can say with a fair degree of confidence is that the M7 will become the most powerful mass series BMW car ever built and one of its quickest in the current range.

Official photos of BMW's upcoming 7-Series M-sport package have surfaced online.

While the package doesn't include the X6 M's 555 hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, it boasts several unique styling accessories which help to differentiate it from standard models. Key exterior design differences include more aggressive front and rear bumpers, "shadowline" trim around the windows, additional chrome detailing, and a set of M-design wheels.

Although the single interior image doesn't provide many details, we can clearly see the most dominate trait of the M-sport package is a large expanse of aluminum trim on the dash. Other changes appear to include aggressively bolstered sports seats and a new M steering wheel.

Look for the M-sport package to be unveiled with the new 306 hp 3.0-liter biturbo diesel 740d, with availability for all 7's shortly thereafter.

The car looks uber cool! The alloys on the first set of pictures looks somewhat out of place. The next set is doing justice to the car.

BMW M Division boss: No M7 in the works

Fresh off our experience with BMW's X6 M and discussions of future products with the M Division chief Dr Kay Segler, more news about the future of the M brand has emerged. Once again it's Segler spreading the news, but this time it's not so good: there is no M7 in the works. Instead, the twin-turbo V12 760i will take the top billing for the 7-series powertrains, and when outfitted with the M-Sport package, will comprise the highest-performance 7 available.

While it's always a sad thing to hear a high-performance variant has met the budgetary axe, it's not so sad in this case, as Segler pointed out to Automotive News. "We've looked at that and decided not to do it. The 760 with AWD is a very strong offer. The M sales would be too small for our total investment," Segler said of the M7. With a 6.0L, 536hp twin-turbo V12 under the hood, Segler has a point. Piped through BMW's AWD system, that power is capable of careening the big sedan to 62mph in under 4.6 seconds while delivering a European cycle rating of 18mpg US.

Those figures match or beat the 555hp X6 M's specifications, so in effect, the regular BMW has simply grown so capable as to usurp the need for an M-variant. There are also those that would argue the X6 M is no true M-car at all. And while handling and transitional performance may not be quite up to M-snuff, the car's active damping control and roll stabilization programs do give a competent balance between the ride the average limousine sedan buyer is looking for at the on-road poise necessary for a car to be called an Ultimate Driving Machine. Of course, we'll have to wait until we get the chance to test the 760i ourselves to deliver a final verdict on the wisdom of skipping the M7.
