With their current problems - they can't afford to be too radical and experiment. Hence an evolution in order to retain customers

It is a hit or miss situ

BMW suffered for a while when the new 7 came out, similarly so did Ford when it came out with the Sierra many moons ago. an issue with a radical shape is that it dates more quickly than a conservative shape. A Merc w124 still looks good (not cool) in modern day england where as an E336 looks old hat

it is far from something that looks like a audi.it is more CLS and maybach influenced than a Audi.it may feel like that in the pics because the rear lights feel larger than what they actually are due to the camaflouge.

and that future of automobile trademark came in the early part of the 19th century when they were really the future of automobile.it is better to have original engineered cars that copycat engineered Audi's,Lexux and BMW's.all inovations in Mercs are found in the next generation rivals.

Back end is Maybach. Front is awesome with the bulged fenders just like a Pajero.

I am completely complaining...
Looks are maybach-ish
But why is length reduced.... Its a S Class for gods sake ... Dont why Mercs are gettig stingy on the lengths of their cars ... Even in the E class W211 is shorter than than W210...
From the pictures it looks like its smaller than the W220

Replace the front grille with that of a Maybach ...and BANG! you have Maybach beaten up to be reduced in size!
Moreover , I toatlly agree with EVOVI,that Mercs are shrinking in size the W210 was the last one to be spared !
A layman if had to buy a merc purely by looking at the size/length ... I would'nt be surprised if he picked the E Class W210 over the S Class W220 !!!

Mercedes always has a long history of making their flagship cars look timeless. I think a big Mercedes should always be long and straight, not coupish, much like the CLS. Even designs 30 years old do not look that dated, IMO.

It looks smaller because it hides it length well. But in fact the new S is longer than the older W220 but by only a mere 6 cm. But from what I hear all that length has gone to increasing rear legroom.

And IMHO this doesn't look at all like the Maybach (maybe a bit in the rear but otherwise completely different). It has more of the lines of the CLS from the side profile.

Wait until you see it in the metal. I did not like the w126 and the bangled BMW in the press photos until I saw them in the flesh
