just heard on ndtv profit that tata's are eyeing two fiat units in italy after they had to close production for 2 weeks cos of recession and decreased demand of cars in europe.
this will be good for tata's as they will acquire the engine technology form fiat and may be even the multiair technology.
what it does to fiat in india .will it make the jv stronger or will tata dump fiat in india as they will have the engines now and will not be dependent on fiat india for the engines

i doubt that the associated IP will be sold. probably just the machinery & real estate

1) In any case, if the Tata-Fiat JV continues, they will end up sharing engines. They are doing it even right now. So no new news here. And Tata is trying to acquire the facilities for engine production, but do you think that Fiat will give up that easily ? Just like Tata wows for its independence, Fiat too would do the same in international market.

2) And about multiair technology, do you think it will come in so fast ? IIRC, at this point of time, not all cars even in Fiat range are available with multiair units. So in future when they come up with multiair, the technological edge might be lost. Multiair is nothing but controlling the amount of air.
We are yet to see TJet in India, so its best for us to stop dreaming about multiair.

3) Multiair is not very good at high rpm as when we put it against VTEC and the turbo charged units from VW are good for the job. Multiair is very nice for bottom end, but I think that having smaller but turbo charged unit is a better option.
