Innova & Fortuner launched in Dubai

I was quite surprised to find an ad for the NEW Toyota Innova here in Dubai. Checked out the pics and sure enough it is the Innova thats been sold in India for the last 6 months or so.

A visit to the showroom confirmed this, except for the fact that the model sold here is the G3 in India with a 2.7 litre VVTi engine.

Also saw a brand new Fortuner on the road, and was quite disappointed by the looks of it. It looks like someone reshaped the Innova's front end to give it a 2 box look - it looks quite ugly. And yes, it comes with a 2.7 litre VVTi too and the interiors are pretty plain jane.

More later.

Hmmmmmm , if i am not mistaken we all were going gaga over the looks of the fortuner , even the Autocar india (January issue) wrote that it has all the ingredients to make it a sucess ,they espically praised its looks .... and here comes steeroid saying that he is really disappointed and the car looks damn ugly and so on ......

But thats where the diff lies when you see something in person ....

I know the looks are subjective but these words could really be a setback for all those waiting for the Fortuner with all their hearts ....

Remember ,seeing is believing ....

Considering you saw the Fortuner on the roads amongst LandCruisers and Hummers, im sure it would have looked plain jane and toally unexciting. I guess on indian roads it might have a better image quality.

@ Steeroid - Good find. How about giving us an exclusive Fortuner driving impression with pictures?

Okay guys, here's an update:

The Innova costs Dhs 77,000 here (Rs.9 lakhs), though there's a cheaper version (steel wheels, no wood trim, etc) for Dhs 74,000 (Rs.8.65 lakhs).

Both versions come with the 2.7 litre VVTi engine.

The Fortuner, though comes in two models:

2.7 ltr VVTi engine for Dhs.87,000 (Rs.10.20 lakhs)

&

4 ltr V6 engine for Dhs.105,000 (Rs.12.30 lakhs)

To put things in perspective, the Camry sells here for about Dhs85,000 (Rs.9.95 lakhs) (base model)

Both vehicles are heavily over-booked, an unusual situation here in Dubai. Theres a minimum waiting period of about 40-45 days for the Fortuner.

How does that price compare with other vehicles out there? I mean, what else could you buy for Dhs 77,000? There must be something to it if there is a waiting list even with all the other alternatives people have there.

Edit: You read my mind and answered my question!

More in perspective:

Toyota Corolla starts at around Dhs50,000

Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6 around Dhs 58,000

Honda Accord (2.4) around Dhs. 66,000

Does that put things in better perspective? Toyota commands a premium around here.

Seem's Toyota really does command a HUGE premium there! Dhs 10,000 more than an Accord. Can you imagine the uproar if that was the pricing strategy in India!
