Sure, BMW is going to build a small, urban electric car – the Megacity – in a few years, but we're pretty sure there are a lot of Bimmer drivers who won't much care for that little thing, no matter what the powertrain. For them, BMW has announced a second treat today: the Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) concept will indeed make the jump to production form.

We first saw the VED a little over a year ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show
in 2009 and BMW says the concept was met with an "overwhelming response." Little surprise, then, that BMW was interested in building this for the people – well, people who can afford the $200,000, give or take, the car will likely cost when it come to market in a few years. Since the VED contained a fair bit of "completely or virtually production-ready components," BMW is confidently giving out media test drives at the Leipzig trade fair center of a road-ready technology showcase vehicle based on the VED.
Final production numbers won't be known for a while, but the prototype features wing doors and a 2+2 seating arrangement. Underhood, a three-cylinder turbo diesel engine "with a hybrid synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle" put out a total of 241 kW/328 bhp and hits 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 4.8 seconds. The sleek car can do this while burning just 3.76 litters of fuel per 100 kilometers (a Toyota Prius-beating 62.5 miles per gallon U.S.) and emitting 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The production VED will also be a plug-in, with the ability to go 50 km (31 miles) on lithium-polymer battery power. The car will boast 354hp / 500Nm torque from a 1.5L three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (in rear) with a 128hp electric motor (in front).

345hp and 500nm from a 3 cylinder petrol engine, this is insane, I think electric motor is just to take care of turbo lag. Didnt like the whole profile and design it looks a bit too futuristic, but I guess that's it all about.

This is what the brief verdict is;

The i8 is an utterly intriguing, unreservedly fun and fantastically addictive car to drive, combining a multi-faceted drive system that is strong enough to propel it along at quite a furious pace together with engaging dynamic qualities that make it terrific fun on the track. And with a few tweaks to dial out that initial understeer, it promises to be even more exciting to pedal at the limit.

However, the tyres seem way too skinny for a car that quick. Handling would take a hit.
To give a fair comparision, this car take almost exactly the same amount of time to reach the ton as the RS5. The RS5 rides on 265 wide tyres all around whereas this is 195 and 215 !

These tires have a lot to do with 570nm torque to manage.

But thankfully this being an AWD the torque will be split between all 4 wheels.

I really admire this car for all it's futuristic technology and stuff attached to that, plus it's BMW, as well as a sports car. But there is a certain dab of solidity missing in the way it looks. Parts of it look delicate, just like fancy pieces of cardboard stuck together with glue!

No doubt it's a fantastic looking Bimmer but personally I wish this car had the traditional looking kidney grilles... Something similar to the one in the very first post of this thread would have been fine for me as well. But that's just my personal opinion.

Close up of the exterior and the interior of the i8, must say, the car looked mental! The only thing I didn't like about the car were it's rims.
