Source - 2012 Volkswagen NMS teased

Right on cue, Volkswagen has released a teaser image of the 2012 New Mid Size Sedan (NMS).
While the company declined to release additional information, they stated the NMS will be sleeker and roomier than the ill-fated Passat. More importantly, the car will built in Tennessee which will allow Volkswagen to sell it for approximately $20,000 - nearly $7,000 less than the Passat.
Expected to look like a Jetta XL, the NMS is a center piece of Volkswagen's plan to sell 10 million vehicles a yaer by 2018. It remains unclear if the NMS will be able to tackle the Accord and Camry, but we'll get a better idea when the car is officially unveiled on Monday.

I hope they dont do a cheapy job like on the new jetta. Apparently the new Jetta is so cheap and basic and price reflects that. Looks good until you sit inside it. The euro version will be better equipped

I agree the the US Jetta seems to have been 'cheapened' a bit to keep the price down. However, the Euro Jetta will probably boast of same or better quality levels that the previous generation. Proof: New Passat, which is better than the older version in each and every aspect.

Whether we get the Euro version or US version with 'upgraded' interiors, should hardly matter to Indian context. BTW, the 'cheapened' Jetta is also thought to boast of same or better quality levels than Honda/Toyota (especially better than Corolla in each and every way!)

This is as per my research...BTW, any news on 'new' Jetta launch in India?

What cars will this new sedan compete with ?? I mean the Jetta takes on the civics, corollas, cruzes, etc and the Passat takes on the Accord, Camry etc.
The spy shots look like the Jettas and im wondering whether this new sedan is based on the Jetta platform?

I would not be too sure. Given what we have seen of a cheaper Jetta (for the USA) and a cheaper Passat (again, for the USA), coupled with the fact that every VW or VAG car we get in India has been the mid-level spec at best with the high end spec name thrown in, starting from the current Jetta ( only a comfortline) to the Polo ( Highline in name only) to even the new Yeti ( Elegance with many trimmings missing), I think that the 2011 Passat and Jetta coming here will be the el-cheapo versions made in Pueblo and Chattanooga.

The Europeans keep the good stuff to themselves and laugh all the way to the bank selling the rest whatever dumbed down versions they are willing to pay for.

If the Passat costs 7000 dollars less than the base Euro version, surely something is missing under that huge expanse of metal?

I wish what you are saying comes out to be true. The biggest problem with Jetta is the 'price'. If it were priced at par with Corolla , it would have sold in bug numbers.

I would not ming cut price Jetta or Passat. I am well aware of the fact that even cut price versions of these vehicles tend to be better than most rivals.

2012 Passat?

Companies do call their new models launched in October till december months as next year models. But i'm noticing for the first time that a Jan 2011 car is called a 2012 model! Just to keep it 'new' till 2012, or am i missing something?

Passat may not be the el-cheapo version. They may still manufacture passat from the german plants. Jetta may get cheaper but may bring in more feature for the money. The current pricing of Jetta is around 18L on road in chennai.

The new passat looks very classy. If they can give me the new passat with the old Front grill, i will be glad. Smirk extending from left year to the right year. I personally dont like the new grill. OVRMs look a bit bigger and the interiors definitely look classic.

I think we can notice the transmission bump in the picture. I think the space for window seats will be more but the third person still has to be content with the transmission bump

If you are commenting based on the last pic above, then pls note that the pic does not have the front seats in place. This is leading to the illusion of more space.

Also, all those pics (even more so the interior) are stretched, to enhance the illusion of space.


Having said that, I still think that the car is a beauty. The Side & the Rear 3/Q views are Beautiful. The front seems to loose it a bit at the lower/front end of the bonnet.

I understand this might be also built for China where the Passat is chauffeur driven.

I like this version, more balanced than the slabby euro version. i wonder if this is as cheapened as the new jetta

I'm sure it will be because the plan is to take the Camry and Accord head-on in the US market.
