The Most Dependable Car Brands - Ranking Survey in US

The US-based report measures the number of problems per 100 cars that owners experience during the first three years of ownership – meaning the lower the number, the better the reliability

I am suprised to see some of the Top German Brands languishing in lower order of the chart.

The Link :

Revealed: The most dependable car brands

Re: The Most Dependable Car Brands - Ranking Survey in US

German brands have messed up their reliability scores in the US over the last 10 - 15 years. The more electronics that go in to the cars, the more the trouble. I guess they are getting better now. I expect to see the German brands climb back up the reliability ladder in the next 5 years.

Suzuki at the bottom half of dependability will not surprise many in India. Nissan getting a low score is surprising.

Gentlemen,
Has any survey ever been conducted on the reliability of our Indian automobile brands? At least I myself had never heard of any such initiatives.

Does Lincoln lead this survey because they sell far lesser number of cars than most of the others featured here? How was the sampling done? What were the issues faced?

I find it hard to digest that Lincoln makes such supremely reliable cars.

One visit to Washington D.C might change your prospective. Almost all the cabs (and there are many) are age old lincolns which are still plying.

Don't understand the survey at all. Problems detected in first three years of vehicle life and yet, they call it 'long term reliability'!

Industry average number of problems in three years ~ 151.

Mazda and Nissan do seem to show higher than average problems compared to other Japanese brands but Mitsubishi! I find it hard to believe!

And Lincoln leading the survey!

Here is another link from J.D 's website which describes the survey somewhat better.

2011 Vehicle Dependability Study Results | J.D. Power

Well, results are results. The analysis is interesting. For the last few years American manufacturers have been making better or more reliable cars. J.D. ratings in the last few years have been reflecting that.

Re: The Most Dependable Car Brands - Ranking Survey in US

I really don't care who wins it, be it US based company or a Jap, but if Lincoln has topped the list I am not surprised. I had the opportunity to drive the Lincoln MKS (but not the MKZ) and it is a pretty good car, probably the best I have driven so far.
On the other hand to completely trust surveys and results nowadays and make judgements out of that is naive.

I have not driven a Lincoln yet, but had the chance to sit on the backseat (taxi) several times. If we ever go back to US for a EBT or something, my car wont be a Honda, Nissan, BMW or anything but a Lincoln Towncar.

Since the figures are based on number defects per 100 vehicles, how many cars they sell should be irrelevant.

Thats not surprising anymore. Except in India, Hyundai is matching and in some cases beating Toyota and Honda not only by virtue of products but also in reliability, lesser number of problems, brand loyalty, etc.

And Hyundai worked very hard at building a reputation in the US. They used to offer 7 year warranty with their cars (not sure if they still do) so that people who do not have confidence in Hyundai can still take the plunge.

Their Car of the Year Ad a couple of years back was also very funny -
I think in India, they don't still pronounce the name right - not even in Hyundai's own advertisements.
