Just saw heart wrenching news about Dan Wheldon passing away in Las Vegas. He was involved in a 15-car crash in Indianapolis 500.

R.I.P Dan Wheldon and wish early recovery to all other drivers who got hurt. My thoughts and prayers are with Wheldon's family and friends.

Small correction chevelle, It was a IndyCar Series race in Las Vegas and not Indianapolis 500. He was had won this year's Indy 500 though.

Also, this was the last race of the series and Wheldon would have won a $5million bonus offered by the series for non-regulars had he won the race. Not sure if this had anything to do with his driving.

OMG, thats an horrific accident. May Dan's soul rest in peace.

Its really sad to see so many lives lost in the race. Indycar will never be the same again.

What a horrific crash. The cars were all over the place. From the helicopter crash I am not able to make out which car was Dan Wheldon's.

Somehow the cars don't seem as safe as F1 cars. Maybe the regulations are not as stringent as F1 then again I remember HANS device was first used in IndyCar then used in F1.

Thanks for correcting me. I meant he has won 2 times Indianapolis 500 and crashed and passed away in Indycar.

I was a big fan of Dan. It is so sad when things like this happen in motorsports. Though no one can change fate, I hope safety keeps improving.

That was a horrific crash.

He was killed because his car flew and hit the fence - cockpit side first. With oval tracks where speeds are always in excess of 200mph ( no turns to brake for) and you have 3-4 cars running in parallel, they should have better safety than that. 2 cars touched and that sent cars flying. Time to come up with safer design.

Sad to see a life lost.

A lot of effort goes into designing a safe race car. I wonder if similar effort is put into proper track design. Maybe some accountability is in order for race track designers and organizers of the event.

Funny, even on this forum,whenever I have asked about safety aspects like crash ratings, I have hardly got a reply!! All the folks care about is is the ICE great? Do you have space in the third row? Why is the paint job Bad??!!! What goes into race cars today is what comes into passenger cars tomorrow
