Whilst looking for the source of a particular vintage Formula 1 picture that i fell in love with, i stumbled across an amazing discussion on this site

A member named Rick Finch had posted his collection of old F1 pictures. I've selected a few of them to share here, but please visit the link on dogfightmag to see the full collection. Also, i'm not sure if these are all images taken by him!

I really don't know anything much about the cars and drivers from back then, so the description above each picture will be fairly vaguely pieced together from filenames and other info. Feel free to correct/add info.

One things for sure though - formula 1 seemed a lot more interesting back then. Every team was innovating in different areas, and every car looked unique.

This is just "awe-some" collection Rehaan. Thanks for sharing. I think, that era of F1 was of evolution and less regulation. I believe, that led to lot of innovation by teams in those eras and some strange components. Few points that I could note:
1) There was minimal safety consideration for spectators. No tyre walls / reinforcements. Some photographers are clicking away to glory from as close as few feet.
2) Liked the open Engine plan!
3) Lots of cars are air-borne! May be photographer liked the flying cars!!

Thanks Rehaan! Truly the Golden Greats of Formula One Racing.
Simpler cleaner times and a more gentlemanly era...

Thanks a lot for the priceless collection.
Many people get into arguments comparing F1 greats across different eras, personally i think each of the greats in various eras deserve their own space.
Racing back then in my opinion required "balls" compared to today's boys.

Thanks Rehaan. A wonderful collection indeed. By the way I have a question. Why are some cars air borne unlike the present day F1 cars which are glued to the track. Is it because of the low downforce setup or is it because of the track design.:)

+1 . Surely it's one of the reasons why F1 has lost its charm. I think that element made the sport more unique, drivers' performance actually altered depending on their character and personality.

Driving in a 1500hp car with one hand on the lever, and one on the steering wheel, and that too in the days without safety standards, :Shockked:. Back then risk takers were rewarded, now the stewards stand at the tracks with maces and clubs in their hands :Frustrati.

Combo of weight + downforce + track design. not sure, but I think all of the pics of airborne cars here are of ones @ the gring, which has got to be the most ridiculous track on the planet in terms of elevation change. But I think track design is the most crucial element, except for that South African track (the kink straight @ kyalami ?) and Nurburgring, I am not sure if there were other tracks airborne prone.

I found driving on the gring scary on a 360 due to its swoops, drops, climbs, and hills. I can't even imagine how they go such speeds in reality when the eye can see nothing but green.

Those were the men, those were the machines, those were the circuits. Amazing!

These old jewels are as fast, ferocious and beautiful as it gets. And they are packed with innovations and very bold designs. Really, the golden age of F1.

Now, it more of a circus. :)

Thanks Rehaan for a great thread.

Fantastic pictures there, Rehaan!

Unfortunately, the relentless pursuit for absolute accuracy and safety has killed the charm that these wonderful single-seaters manage to exude so effortlessly. I'd kill just to listen to that rorty soundtrack as it screams down the back straights of F1 circuits around the globe, let alone drive one!

Opposite lock all the way! Some of those pictures actually prove that drivers in the past had bigger cojones than the ones we have today. Driving high, or flying low? You pick! :p

Rehan,

Thanks for starting this thread.

I have with me a book with lot of wonderful pictures of the "Golden Years". I think its worth sharing them here if you don't mind.

After my duties at Abu Dhabi F1 this weekend, I shall post them if you are OK with it. But tell me how do I caption the Individual picture ? I never learnt how to do it.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Ram

Sure, you're most welcome & encouraged to share more pictures here!

However, do respect the copyright of the source you take images from.

If you have a book, perhaps just include 1 or 2 images and a link to the book on amazon / flipkart for those interested.

You should follow the procedure in post #2 here, and include text between each attached image : http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/announ...-team-bhp.html

Thanks,
R
