Alfa Romeo returns to F1; ties up with Sauber

Sauber F1 Team has announced a multi-year technical and commercial partnership agreement with Alfa Romeo. The Italian car manufacturer, which is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), will be joining the Sauber F1 Team as Title Sponsor from 2018 onwards. By doing so, Alfa Romeo is returning to Formula One after more than 30 years of absence from the sport.

We are delighted to announce that we have reached a multi-year technical and commercial partnership agreement with Alfa Romeo.

The partnership, which includes a strategic, commercial and technological cooperation between Alfa Romeo and the Sauber F1 Team, will enable the exchange of engineering and technical know-how, and provide new opportunities for the two organizations within Formula One and beyond. From 2018, the team will be known as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team. The 2018 F1 car will bear the Alfa Romeo logo, and will be equipped with the 2018 Ferrari power units.

This is real good news and hopefully with 2018 Ferrari engines they will be able to fight in midfield if not higher.
But the engine is not rebranded as Alfa Romeo. I won't be surprised if in near future the Sauber F1 team gets dissolved, just like Lotus.

Out of curiosity, what impact does engine re-branding have and why?

This overall is great news for Sauber, but lets jut hope that in the future they do not get dissolved!

Pretty much nothing actually. I was just pointing at the speculations that had been made before the announcement. Also if Alfa come in as a engine supplier, I believe then they will have to register as a constructor, so more paper work. Currently I believe they will be to Sauber, like what Aston Martin is to Redbull racing.

When BMW had bought Sauber they didn't kill the brand and kept the team name as "BMW-Sauber". So they survived once.
But if Ferrari are serious about getting junior development team (like Toro Rosso to RBR), then I'd say the Sauber name has to leave.

FCA did a good job reviving the Alfa name in F1, hope they bring back Lancia to Rally

A new brand coming or returning to F1 is always good news .

Am sure Sauber drivers are happy about Ferrari power over the lame Honda engines. Ferrari too gets more $$$ as well as technical feedback & running for their engines.

This proves what we always knew; that is, Ferrari isn't leaving F1 - related thread (Ferrari to consider pulling out of Formula 1).

I'm afraid not. Alfa-Sauber being a Ferrari junior team means- Ferrari junior drivers will be driving there. Most likely Charles LeClerc to take the place of Pascal Wehrlein and Ericsson will probabably be kept as reserve driver and in his place maybe Antonio Giovinnazi might race.
If anything it's bad news for Pascal as he is also a Mercedes junior driver(and races in DTM for Merc) , Ferrari will not be happy keeping him in a development team.

There are rumors the new drivers will be announced the coming week.

True they say it every year, now even Mercedes are singing the same song.

Its a return to the good old times for Alfa Romeo! The gorgeous Giulia is lapping up the awards and now the brand is back in F1.

However, the biggest excitement for me will be the appointment of Charles Leclerc! The reigning GP2 champion is rated highly across the paddock and will be a great addition to Sauber.

Its been a long time since we got a Ferrari academy driver up with the big boys after the tragic accident of Jules Bianchi.

Hopefully Charles will claim his seat at Ferrari soon enough.

Alfa Romeo-Sauber announce Charles LeClerc and Marcus Ericsson as their two drivers for the 2018 season; and Antonio Giovinnazi as the third Driver.
This is a shame Antonio is a very good talent, but pay drivers have their way in F1 as Marcus Ericsson's sponsers own a fat share in Sauber.

Also they unveiled their livery, which also is a massive disappointment as they've ditched the iconic Dark Red Alfa colour and gone with Red-White livery. Only hope is Charles to destroy Ericsson the coming season, it'll be an easy task as he always is in the back of the grid.

This could still be a rumour but some are saying that Maserati could re-enter with the Haas F1 team. Brand sponsoring and changing the name plate on the engine to Maserati.

Though a possibility. I think it is unlikely, as Sergio Marchionne(CEO of both FCA and Ferrari) has hinted many times there must be a Ferrari activity in Formula E. And him also stating many times they are exploring options for Maserati in Formula E.

Auto sport reported this yesterday.
