Double amputee Alex Zanardi will drive in the 2019 24 Hours Of Daytona

BMW announced this weekend that two-time CART champion, ex-Formula 1 driver and winner of paralympic gold medals, Alex Zanardi will be driving a BMW M8 GTEs at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019.

Zanardi lost both legs after a CART crash in 2001. However, he was back into racing from 2003 with the help of specially designed hand controls. He spent five seasons driving for BMW in the WTCC, a season driving the Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series, and has even tested the F1 and DTM cars and recently competed in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

The custom made steering wheel with hand controls was designed to ensure that non-amputee co-drivers could share the same car in the 24 hour series.
