Ford considering a move to join Formula E

According to a media report, Ford is exploring the idea of entering Formula E. Initially, the American carmaker will be looking at partnering with one of the existing teams, with plans to become a 'factory team' after its contract with the World Endurance Championship expires in mid-2019.

It has been reported that Ford's presence could be seen as early as the next season, i.e. the fifth season of the all-electric racing series. Other manufacturers like BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan Nismo have already committed to join Formula E. While BMW will supply engines to the Andretti team for the fifth season, Nissan will come in as a supplier of cars to existing teams. Mercedes and Porsche join in as the eleventh and the twelfth teams in the series from season six.

Formula E can have a maximum of 12 teams with 2 cars each. Drivers can use up to 200 kW of power during the qualifying sessions, while for the race, power is restricted to 180 kW. Additionally, 3 drivers selected by fans through social media are eligible for an additional burst of power in a 5 second window in the second half of the race. The race lasts for 50 minutes with a mandatory pit stop in which, the drivers swap cars. Tyre changes are banned unless there is a puncture. At present, in the fourth season, Mahindra Racing is leading the points tally with two wins in five races. There are seven races to go.
