Formula 1 to get a second race in America

The Miami City Commission has approved a resolution to bring Formula 1 to the city of Miami from 2019-2028. While the exact schedule has not yet been decided, the inaugural race is expected to be held sometime in October 2019.

The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix will be the second race in the United States of America after the United States Grand Prix (USGP). The US GP has been held 47 times, in over 10 different circuits as of 2017. Since 2012, it has been held in Elroy, Texas (19 km south of Austin). Liberty Media - the owners of the Formula 1 had earlier held discussions to host races at Las Vegas and New York.

The proposed 4.14 km circuit will go around the American Airlines Arena, pass through downtown and cross the Port Boulevard bridge above Biscayne Bay. The tall buildings and yachts surrounding the circuit are expected to offer views of the race.

Formula 1 has 500 million fans worldwide. The 21 races conducted across five continents are broadcast to 1.8 billion viewers and have 15 million followers on social media. According to data provided by Formula 1 authorities, the USGP in Austin gave over US$ 2.8 billion of benefits from 2012 to 2015 and generated more than 200,000 visitors during race weekends.

Will this race be at the expense of some GP or add to the ever-growing list. At 21, it's already a hectic calendar.

Also, what kind of a race track is that? Cars with the strongest flat out speed will have quite the advantage.

And Miami in Oct means potentially a wet race.

Seems like a track designed by some child with a pencil. At this rate, F1 will soon be racing on ovals.

It looks very similar to that of Baku city circuit. Although it doesn't look very exciting, you never know, it might turn out to be very exciting like Baku. Bit initial impressions-not very good.

US being a car mad land deserves a second Grand Prix. However, then are heavily involved with the Oval Racing in the Indianapolis mould. Formula 1 is considered too heavy for them.

I'm quite divided in thought about these street tracks. If things do this way, most grand prix tracks will shut down and convert to street tracks.

I like Baku, but dislike Singapore and Monaco.

Miami is most likely to replace Baku street circuit.

Re: Formula 1 to get a second race in America

It is very sad to see new street circuits coming up every couple of years and losing legendary circuits like Hockenheimring, Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, Imola, Sepang International Circuit to name a few. Purpose built race tracks are meant for racing and therefore there is a lot of wheel to wheel racing and overtaking. Where as street circuits are far narrower and races are mostly in procession. And with latest gen F1 cars are generating so much downforce that's its nearly impossible to overtake even under DRS. Honestly I do not enjoy street circuits as it makes a very predictable races.

Re: Formula 1 to get a second race in America

Let's not overlook the fact that Liberty Media is an American company. They would obviously want to increase F1's presence in their home market, especially when the car market there is the 2nd largest in the world. Austin is also sufficiently far away from Miami, so the two tracks can enjoy their own audiences.

Miami is a good fit for F1 thanks to all the money, glamour & night life.

Plans to host a Formula One race in Miami next year have been scrapped.

Liberty Media, F1's American owners, stated their intention to take the sport to downtown Miami in October of 2019 earlier this year.

But after Miami chiefs recently delayed a crucial vote until September, having been scheduled to take place on July 26, it is believed that F1 has decided to put the race on hold for at least 12 months.

This is what the yanks will love. They are so used to oval racing that anything else looks like an oddity. I will say why not bring back the Indian GP.

Actually it seems Indycar series has more roads courses and circuits than ovals. The number of ovals in the season is down to 5.

Small mercies. The track looks like it's designed for American muscle cars that can't handle corners. I am just wondering how they would have planned the DRS zones.
