Formula 2 racer Anthoine Hubert has passed away following a crash in Saturday's F2 feature race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

The 22-year-old Frenchman was involved in a multi-car incident at Turn 4 and was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews. All drivers involved were taken to the medical centre, but Hubert sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Hubert have struck a barrier on the outside of the corner, then been collected by Correa, both impacts occuring at very high speed.

FIA statement on the Formula 2 crash at Spa

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars number 12, 19 and 20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car number 19, Antoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

The driver of car number 12, Juan-Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable condition and is being treated at the CHU Liège hospital. More information on his condition will be provided when it becomes available.

The driver of car number 20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical centre.

The FIA is providing support to the event organisers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Sadly none of them did what the Senna did to Eric back in 1992 and all the drivers just pass by. Is it a rule or are they focused only to complete the race despite witnessing the accident?

I believe in today's scenario where medical help is well organised and immediately available, such actions are not needed and moreover another driver stopping in track would just create more chances for yet another accident.

Horrible accident. The tub itself seems to have broken apart on impact from what's seen towards the end of the video

It like the bad news just keeps coming.

Correa has been placed in an induced coma.

"As time has progressed, new complications have surfaced as a consequence of the massive impact he suffered Saturday in Belgium. On his arrival to London, Juan Manuel was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. This is an injury considered common in high impact accidents such as this one.

"Unfortunately, this injury resulted in Juan Manuel falling into Acute Respiratory Failure. Juan Manuel is currently in an Intensive Care Unit that specializes in respiratory injuries. At this point of time he is in an induced state of unconsciousness and under ECMO support. Juan Manuel is in critical but stable condition. We are confident that our son will surprise us like he always does with his tremendous fighting will and strength and will recover completely.

From what I read on Reddit, people said that ECMO is used as a last-ditch-effort. Hope Correa pulls through! :(
