Rest in Peace, Sir Moss.

You are the inspiration behind me getting into cars. As a young boy i read your story of the Mille Miglia and how you won. I have been re reading it over the years and it still gets me excited to go out and imagine what it was like.

The golden fields of Elysium await you. May you race in that 300 SLR forever and ever.

R.I.P. Sir Moss. A true legend of the legendary era! Always in aw of his childish energy even when he was an octogenarian. His lively smile when on the track was such a refreshing sight in the otherwise money oriented F1 of today. Typical polished witty British gentleman. Respect.

Re: Sir Stirling Moss is no more

In this era of cut throat competition in the world of sport and winning at any cost is the shibboleth of most teams, sportsman ship is a rare commodity.

Worth reading the last para in this news.
Quote:
His renowned sportsmanship cost Moss the 1958 title when he defended the conduct of British rival Mike Hawthorn following a spin at the Portuguese GP. Moss’ action helped spare Hawthorn a six point penalty, with Hawthorn winning the title by a single point.

Re: Sir Stirling Moss is no more

I can honestly say I don’t do heroes. But Moss is an exception. In my book the greatest driver of all times and a true gentleman as well. Nobody else comes close as far as I am concerned.

His win in 1955 at the Mille Miglia, with navigator Jenkinson, is the stuff that makes for legends. Driving this almost 1000 miles route at those sort of speeds (averaging 160 km/h) is just unbelievable. These were essential little country roads. Not mentioned very often, but after the race Moss hopped in another Mercedes and rove straight to Stuttgart for some Mercedes do he had to attend.

He was very very fast in any car!

I had the pleasure of meeting him once. He was stranded in a Jaguar E type somewhere on a back road in France. We happened to notice the EType with the hood up and stopped as we always do for fellow classic car enthusiast in trouble. Turned out it was the big man himself! Got him going again.

RIP Stirling

Jeroen

Wow, this must have been a fantastic experience. What was the feeling when you realised that it is the man himself?

Re: Sir Stirling Moss is no more

I have never been a sports person, not even motor sports, but, when I was young, Stirling Moss was not just a driver, he was part of the language. He was the synonym for driving too fast on the roads! "Who do you think you are? Stirling Moss?"

Fifty years on, if you ask me, name a racing driver without thinking about it, it might still be his name I'd come up with. Legendary. Sad to see the legend pass away.
