Re: Formula 1 : 2020 British Grand Prix - Silverstone (July 31 - August 2)

The legendary airfield turned motorsport track returns! Silverstone holds some of the best back to back corners in the current F1 calendar!

Copse-Maggots-Becketts-Stowe

This is the track where F1 cars truly unleash their full potential. Although I prefered the older starting position which immediately used to lead drivers into the above mentioned complex of corners. The new starting position isn't that great as it leads to pretty lame corners.

Though the Wellington Straight has provided plenty of passing opportunities, thanks to being a DRS zone, it will take guts to take someone on the outside (like Vettel did over Bottas in 2018). And who can forget the titanic battle between Verstappen and LeClerc last year!

Here is an interesting video about this amazing track:

Sergio Perez ruled out of British GP (and possibly the next one as well) after testing positive for Covid-19!

Hulkenberg being tipped as the most likely replacement. Imagine if he gets that podium!

More on what happens after Checo tested positive explained here.

What happens to the 2nd Racing Point now?

Damn, going by his current form, I was hoping he'd get a podium at Silverstone. Now it will be up to Stroll to get Racing Point on the 3rd step of the podium. Have to say, he has also looked in great touch.

Goes on to show the sort of morale boost a good car underneath the driver can provide. This also goes on to show how tough Alonso was in the under performing Ferrari earlier last decade!

He has always been a unique character in the sterile world of F1. Latest of which was the cheeky comment on the radio after passing Sainz at the Styrian GP

It will be great to see Hulk, but wouldn't he also have to be under same set of protocols as others with respect to testing negative? Isn't it too late to get him to race now with less than a day to go for FP1?

Yes Indeed! Nico Hulkenburg is set to become the replacement driver for Racing Point in place of Checo.

Nico Hulkenberg returns to Formula One with Racing Point!

EDIT:- Hulkenburg's name has now been listed on the official FP1 Leaderboard albeit without a team .

Checo has most likely got to know that he will be replaced with Seb and is likely very angry and frustrated. These 2 episodes of fainting and now testing positive started after the Belgian GP when the news picked steam that Seb is most likely set to join Racing Point. Smoke (and rumors) most of the times are a result of underlying fire (and facts).

You mean after the Hungarian GP? Still no reason to throw away good points and chances of podium finishes, this is probably the best year Racing Point team might have after all! And he knows it.

Could be just coincidence. He had to rush to Mexico to visit his injured mother, and that's the most likely reason for catching it.

After being in such a form with Merc's W10 engines, it's a shame that he got tested positive. I wish him & all the ones who were in close contact with him a speedy recovery.

As expected, checo got replaced by Hulkenberg. He probably did not even know yesterday that he was gonna race this weekend at Silverstone. Judging by the lap times in FP1, he put a best time of 1.28.592 finishing P9. A mere 1.170 seconds behind Max in P1. I am expecting good things from him at qualifying & the race.

Apparently he was confirmed just minutes before the start having had to work through all the COVID era protocols. They should have got the other Nico though, that would have been quite interesting!

Seems that the start was repositioned due to the construction of the new pit building. adequate pit facilities. I believe the MotoGP races still start from the old starting position though.

Proper high speed test for the cars for the first time this season after the relatively slow tracks of Hungary and Austria. Not a low downforce affair like Monza though with the slow speed sections necessitating a medium downforce setup. FP1 saw Charles in P6 so seems Ferrari has picked up some performance.

I like the difference in tyre setups for this weekend and the next though I am sure teams will be testing the long run pace of the mediums and softs that become the hardest and second hardest compound available next week.

Drive on,
Shibu.

True, though having watched so many races of different eras (at least past two decades), had gotten used to that starting position and lead up to the start-finish straight. The different compounds should add some uncertainty in the next race. Though Silverstone turns everything like lateral load, tyre stress etc to 11, which will see most of the people trying a 2-stopper with C2-C2-C3. C1s simply will not last even 5-6 laps.

This is similar to the change which was brought to the iconic high speed Hockenheimring in 2001, basically making it 'tamer' than the original high speed layout.

Glad to see the Hulk back!

Here's a video of him commenting on the Racing Point's dynamics, and how it compares to his old Renault.
