Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone

Images of the 2022 Formula 1 race car have been leaked online, revealing the design changes made for the upcoming season.

While the images aren’t from any specific team, it is said to be a show car, commissioned by F1 to be shown to the public. Reports suggest that Liberty Media has plans to officially unveiling the 2022 F1 show car at Silverstone, during the British Grand Prix weekend.

As seen from the images, the 2022 F1 car features a lowered front nose with simplified aerodynamics. The car can also be seen with a more aggressive rear wing, while also having tighter bodywork and a simplified floor structure. However, this is just the base model, around which the teams will build their 2022 contenders.

Whether the actual cars end up looking even close to this remains to be seen.

Teams have their own interpretations of the rules and they'll try to find loopholes to extract maximum performance out of their cars, pleasing designs be damned.

Just look at the FIA's interpretation of the 2014 rules and how the actual cars turned out to be. Caterham's CT05 is one nightmare that comes to mind.

That's one fantastic design even for the base.

After the teams start to put up and design the small intricate carbon pieces, its going to be even more interesting.

Found a couple of renders online.

I am a fan of the new design already.

Looks much simpler and meaner for sure. These new designs/renders are growing on me.

Very excited for the new F1 future. The current cars look to busy design wise particularly the bargeboard area and the Front wing (even after the rule change). Solid chance for Alpine to catch up the front runners and its much needed for the sport if 3 or 4 teams fighting it out at the front.

Amazing design, fell in love with this series once again.
I honestly want Ferrari to do better, times were simpler during Schumacher days.

Loving the design though, cannot wait to see the teams build their cars.

What are your thoughts on a hybrid F1 race?

Cars are getting bigger and heavier. And with the world moving to electric mobility I don't see a reason for f1 to stay hybrid. They should bring back the V8 and stay ICE only. Ethanol perhaps. You have the formula e on the otherside anyway.

They will never bring back the V8s because the manufactures like Mercedes and Renault will leave the sport because hybrid is the future and the manufacturers who may be planning to enter the sport will drop the idea.

What they need to do instead is make the cars lighter. They are too damn heavy. If they can get it back to 650 kgs with driver excluding fuel from the current 752 than we have lower energy going through the tyres and nimbler cars. But it’s not gonna happen. The weight will go upto 768 kgs with driver and without fuel in 2022.

Those 18 inch wheels makes these car look a lot better. I think F1 should have adopted these wheels a lot more earlier. The research that goes in to F1 should trickle down to regular cars too, otherwise all that research and development is just a waste of money.

Re: Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone

There are a number of photos running around the internet showing the size difference of the 2022 car with current ones, but most of them are not reliable measures. 2022 regulations says a maximum wheelbase of 3600mm, which is about the same as the W11 is now, which is already stupidly long. And I think all the 2022 cars will be at that maximum limit, so I don't expect them to be shorter.
But as Hamilton stated, even though the cars can follow closer than before, they are going to get heavier. FIA really missed the boat on making the cars smaller and lighter.

This is how the rear end of 2022 F1 car will look like. Much clean and simpler than today's complex diffusers.

Re: Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone

Formula 1 has showcased a full-sized model of its 2022 car to the public for the very first time, ahead of the British GP.

Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-20210715080158_2022_f1.jpg

From 2022, F1 cars will sport more simplified front wings, bigger rear wings, wheel-wake control devices, a simplified suspension and low-profile tyres with larger 18-inch rims (up from the current 13-inch rims).

Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-20210716_073758.jpg

For the first time since the 1980s, F1 cars will use ground effects to generate downforce, with the 2022 cars featuring deep tunnels in the floor to suck the car to the track.

Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-20210716_073802.jpg

F1 is also reintroducing wheel covers and adding small winglets over the wheels to control airflow.

Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-20210716_073805.jpg

According to F1’s calculations, the new cars will only lose 5-10 percent of downforce while running in another car’s wake. With the dirty air affecting cars less significantly, it should give drivers a better chance to battle and overtake.

The rules also feature tweaks to the suspension, brakes and chassis, with the weight of the cars increased from 743kg to 768kg.

F1 managing director Ross Brawn said: We still have cars struggling to follow each other during the race. The regulations for 2022 will address this problem and create an opportunity for closer battles and more wheel-to-wheel racing.

Why the high ground-clearance at the front?
Are they turning it into a cross-over?

I am amazed to learn the high percentages of downforce lost while driving in the slipstream of the current F1 cars (exact figures stated in the F1 youtube channel's upload from 1:00).

I always believed the slipstream is the place to be for even better racing dynamics! It sure is from 2022.

Comparing the key differences between the 2021 and 2022 F1 car designs. Source

Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-1image.jpg

Front wing
Quote:
The 2022 version is designed to be a lot more ‘neutral’ than the current generation of highly complex designs, meaning it’s less aerodynamically sensitive when a driver is running close behind another car and directs airflow in a less disruptive way.
Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-image-1.jpg

Wheels and tyres
Quote:
F1 cars have used 13-inch wheels. But that will change in 2022 when F1 moves to 18-inch wheels with low-profile tyres, giving the cars a contemporary, aggressive look.

Another difference is the introduction of wheel covers, which have been used in F1 before, but are now mandatory to help keep airflow clean and limit what teams can do around the tyres aerodynamically.
Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-image-2.jpg

Rear wing
Quote:
The 2022 rear wing is a very different, with its upper ‘rolled tips’ rather than straight endplates and additional lower elements. The new design is specifically to draw the aerodynamic wake (the airflow coming off the car)
Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-image-3.jpg

Floor
Quote:
2022 car features fully shaped underfloor tunnels, rather than the stepped floor used currently. This change in floor shape will allow the teams to create large amounts of downforce through ground effect
Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-image-4.jpg

Bodywork
Quote:
2022 car is a lot cleaner, especially around the area either side of the cockpit where the current bargeboards and other bits of aerodynamic furniture seen on the 2021 car
Here's a first look at the 2022 F1 car; could be official unveiled at Silverstone-image-5.jpg

Weight
Quote:
the weight of cars is going up by 5%, from 752kg to 790kg. Why? First of all, the new wheels are heavier – overall the four wheels and tyres are around 14kg heavier than in 2021.
