Mercedes to quit Formula E after 2022 season; focus on F1 & EV development

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that they will quit Formula E at the end of the 2022 season. The announcement comes just days after the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team won the 2020/21 constructor's championship while Nyck de Vries won the driver's championship.

The German carmaker stated that the decision to leave the electric racing series was to focus on the development of future road-going EV models. The decision is also part of Mercedes-Benz's recent announcement to sell only electric vehicles from 2030.

The carmaker stated that they will use the lessons learnt in Formula E to develop new EV platforms for the future. The company currently has a number of updates planned in the EV segment, including the development of three electric-only platforms, scheduled to launch in 2025. The company will also be using their Formula E learnings to develop the AMG.EA architecture for their more performance-oriented EV models.

Looks like FE car development (or lack thereof ) has as much road relevance as F1 hybrid engines had.

I believe this is the third car manufacturer to announce quitting the sport this season. Does not bode well for a series that is not taken seriously anyways by half the motorsport fans. FE is inevitable, they just need to do a better job in keeping fans and manufacturers interested.

I disagree. Like horse racing still exists & is popular today, petrol-powered racing will always have a strong following. The sound, gearshifts, fuel management, engine durability and blowups etc are far more fun than hearing electric motors buzzing around. Even if & when EVs have completely taken over the world, petrol-powered F1 & MotoGP will still remain IMO. Just like horse racing...

Re: Mercedes to quit Formula E after 2022 season; focus on F1 & EV development

This is a confusing move considering Mercedes unveiled a roadmap to go electric in a big way in all their divisions. Formula E was a good way to keep the innovation counter running considering the engineers here have a much more free hand to innovate which could have been then used in the regular EV's.
