Charles Leclerc crashes Niki Lauda's 1974 Ferrari F1 car at Monaco Historic GP

Charles Leclerc has crashed F1 legend Niki Lauda's 1974 Ferrari F1 car during the 2022 Monaco Historic Grand Prix event.

As part of the biennial event, F1 driver Charles Leclerc got behind the wheel of Niki Lauda's 1974 Ferrari 312B3 F1 car for a three-lap demonstration run around the iconic Monaco street circuit. He shared the circuit with Jacky Ickx, who drove his old 1972 Ferrari 312B2 F1 car.

Leclerc took one lap to get familiar with the 70s single-seater race car before picking up the pace on his third lap, only to lose control and crash into the barriers at the famous Rascasse - a tight, slow speed, right-hander. The Monegasque spun & backed into the barriers, dislodging the rear wing of the iconic Ferrari. The crash was said to have been caused by a brake failure, with Leclerc intimating a problem with the pedals. Leclerc, however, did manage to limp the car to the main straight before bringing it to a halt.

Charles Leclerc is currently leading the 2022 F1 World Driver's Championship by a good margin over Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The Ferrari F1 driver has suffered a string of bad luck at his home race over the last two seasons. He has completed the Monaco GP only once - on his debut year at Formula 1, where he finished P18. The 2022 Monaco GP is scheduled to be held in two weeks' time, and Leclerc will be hoping to improve his luck this time around.

Bad luck continues or is it that these cars from 70-80s are raging bulls sans much of the electronic wizardry?

On a side note - the movie "Rush" is one of my absolute favourites along with "Ford vs. Ferrari".

Maybe the Monaco curse is broken for this year and Charles will be able to finally finish his home Grand Prix this year.

Going by what Ferrari has been up to this year in the slow-speed corners, it would be fair to say that Charles stands a good chance of winning the race.

I also found a video online, where he meets Jacky Ickx after the crash, explaining to him how he just lost the brakes. Perhaps realising how dangerous the cars were back then, Ickx replied with a simple, it is okay as long as you are okay.
