Formula 1: Alpine secure a deal with Mercedes to use their engine from 2026

The Alpine F1 team has announced a deal with Mercedes, which will see the racing team use the German manufacturer's engine from the 2026 season. The deal is also said to include the supply of gearboxes for the 2026 season, with Alpine planning to produce their own gearbox at Enstone from 2027.

Alpine already announced last month that they will shut down their works engine programme at the end of the 2025 season. While the Alpine F1 team had been in talks with multiple engine suppliers, Mercedes emerged as the frontrunner before finally securing the deal.

The Alpine F1 team will run their own engine for the 2025 season before switching to Mercedes in 2026, along with the new set of regulations scheduled to be implemented.

The Enstone-based Formula 1 team released a statement, saying, "The multi-year agreement will see Mercedes-Benz supply Alpine with Power Units for the duration of the new regulations era, from 2026 until at least 2030. Alongside the Power Unit, Alpine will also be supplied with Mercedes gearboxes from the 2026 season. The team remains focused on performing in the strongest way possible in the 2024 and 2025 seasons."

Smart move.
When 2026 regulations kick in, Merc’s PU will be hard to beat. Just hope the next car they make isn’t a tractor and doesn’t move with the same porpoising as the last two generations. With everything sorted we might be seeing Kimi win his first championship.
With a horrible season like Alpine’s having (barring interlagos), changing engine supplier seemed the practical choice. Reminds me of RedBull terminating their engine contract with Renault and Cybil fishing Danny Ric in return. (If that hadn’t happened, we’d still be seeing one of the most talented drivers driving on circuit today and not out of f1.)

Re: Formula 1: Alpine secure a deal with Mercedes to use their engine from 2026

Mercedes have shown over the last two regulation changes that they have more expertise with the engines as compared to aerodynamic. Definitely no laggards in that aspect also, but they made a hash with the starting point itself in '22 and have not found their way back still. And given up too now, it seems.

A fresh start in '26, could this be the resurgence of domination, who knows.
Has alpine sniffed out something obvious?
