Yup, but it's done mainly coz the television stations are not airing Sunday's final session. All they wanna do is make it a one session qualifying, but retain the single lap format.

I really don't know why they just don't go back to the original 60 minute, 12 lap format. That was really the best.

Dude the 60 min---12 lap format ROCKED...
those old fuddie duddies sitting on their bony backsides in Paris should just quit and let in some young blood into the running of the sport...
I vote.... let all the drivers that are retiring be on the so called"COUNCIL"

I agree with rtech, the 60 minute 12 lap qualification setup was ideal... it was so much more interesting to watch, teams almost had races towards the end of the session to get a empty piece of track..
The present format really sucks... and the whole aggregate time thing isn't good for any kind of motorsport.

2L8uLoose - yes the old format was great...but problem was less exposure for smaller teams....with that format you would never have seen Karthikeyan's lap!
Also 1 hot lap is much tougher as the driver has to strike a balance......a hot lap but with caution as even 1 mistake is deadly...and also with the 12lap format people always cribbed abt a crowded track etc..now you have tobe on the button and on a clean track

I like the change to 1 session on Sat only but dont like that this will be with race fuel.
Would much prefer to see an all out qualifying trim, low fuel session...after which you can fill up teh car to race fuel level.
With this, there is no ambiguity as to who is the fastest driver+car on a given track that day and not speculcation as to who might be on low fuel/heavy...etc

Another problem with the 12 lap, 60 minute session was that drivers would have problems on their hot lap because of other cars on track OR other drivers performing their hot lap as well.

another problem is that the teams dont have 4 sets of tyres to run in qualifying like they did earlier..
each driver now gets only 3 sets of tyres for the entire weekend ( + 1 reserve set in case of accidents etc )

and.. it didnt mix things up.. fastest guy starts first.. no room for strategy
