The breakaway series thread

Well, since we now have an official breakaway coming, perhaps we should discuss it outside F1 threads. Team BHPians, feel free to post anything that is specific to the series here.

To start with, what do you all think the breakaway should be called since F1 and related trademarked stuff cannot be used? Any interesting names for the newest motorsport event in the world?

Someone posted this name on another forum.

"They asked Ron Dennis to come up with a name, and his suggestion was:

The World series of high velocity motorised conveyances competing in an equitable and inclusive environment of mutual trust and understanding while simultaneously embracing the core values of its key stakeholders and leveraging the knowledge capital and synergistic goal sharing strategies necessary to elicit the ultimate goal of all participants - Championship"

I doubt they can use FOTA since it stands for Formula One Teams Association, and Formula 1, Formula One, F1 and other stuff is trademarked by Bernie/FOM. Also, I doubt they'd want to keep it as "Formula Formula One Teams Association" as their name for now.

The FOTA finds itself in a tricky situation. Ferrari, Mclaren etc are the rear benchers currently, while the winning car itself has a Merc Engine. Rules will have to be rewritten to suit the manufacturer teams, and then the others are going to crib about it.

It will be a very delicate balancing act, question is, Who will do it? I believe Ferrari has the most clout - however, Toyota, Mclaren, BMW etc are not going to allow Ferrari to dictate things.

At the moment, the FOTA teams make for strange bedfellows. We will have to wait and see - it will be interesting to see how the teams put all their differences behind their backs and make this new championship successful. But then, money is a powerful driver and motivator.

Well, Lola and N.Technology have both pulled out their applications from the FIA for next season and are probably now interested in joining FOTA and their breakaway series. Even Prodrive/Aston Martin might be joining them. Mallya has also said that he will decide about his team once both sides are done bickering and fighting.

Mosley has slyly escaped the shame of advertising the F1 grid for next year, considering that they now have 2 of the current backmarker teams, 2-3 teams from lower GP categories which nobody's really heard of, and the rest of the applicants who are nobodies themselves.

The new series will have a majority of the sponsors. Ecclestone is going to be in deep deep excreta considering that the whole foundation of FOM and CVC is on huge debts which will now implode, considering the loyalty, and stipulations in contracts of sponsors, circuits, TV companies and what-not. Nobody wants to take part in or sponsor a has-been racing series with a couple of stubborn and power/money hungry 70 year old idiots at the helm, and a bunch of nobodies racing bathtubs around boring and empty circuits in the Middle-East and Asia. Meanwhile, Mosley has said that he's going to run the elections for another term as FIA headmaster. What a tub of crock.

FIA sues FOTA

The breakaway series thread-fia_sue_fota.jpg
Just moments after the conclusion of second free practice for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the FIA has announced that it will begin legal proceedings against the Formula One Teams Association over its proposal to form a breakaway series to rival F1.

FOTA made the announcement late on Thursday night that it was to start its own series in 2010, having failed to reach an agreement with the FIA to commit to the F1 grid for next season thanks to the ongoing dispute over Max Mosley's idea for a budget cap.

BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso, Renault and Toyota all planned to quit F1 as a result of the ongoing dispute but the governing body has now responded with the threat of legal action.

The breakaway series thread-fota_breaks_f1.jpg

In a short statement, the FIA revealed that the teams – and Ferrari in particular – had contractual commitments to F1 that couldn't broken, leaving it with little option but to begun legal proceedings.

The governing body also confirmed that the publication of the 2010 entry list has also been delayed.

“The FIA's lawyers have now examined the FOTA threat to begin a breakaway series,” the missive read. “The actions of FOTA as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari's legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law. The FIA will be issuing legal proceedings without delay.

“Preparations for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship continue but publication of the final 2010 entry list will be put on hold while the FIA asserts its legal rights.”

More news: Canada (i.e. the Montreal circuit) has stopped negotiations with F1. Haha, I wonder why?

autosport.com - F1 News: FOTA beginning work on new series

Well according to that, the breakaway may still be regulated by the FIA. Regulated only though. FOTA frames the rules and the FIA regulates them. Sort of like legislative and judicial bodies that act independently. Which may make the FIA legal action redundant

Haha, Mosley and Bernie have suddenly gone soft on the whole issue.

Mosley backtracks on legal threat and 'looney' claim - Planet-F1 News - from planet-f1.com
Bernie: Breakaway would be a total disaster - Planet-F1 News - from planet-f1.com

They're realising the unity of the teams only now. Good luck. And the new series doesn't have to be sanctioned by the FIA. The Le Mans runs without FIA's involvement and is celebrated the world over. Maybe, just maybe, the new series will finally do away with Mosley's interference.
