Me, an old FIAT Uno Turbo.....and the 'Ring...

so this was the one, a four day visit to the badboy of track days, "green hell", the "widowmaker", but like a moth to a bulb, you just cant help but need to go!!!!

photos all below, the black 500 is my friends, we took the channel tunnel over, straight black across france, belgium, into germany, through the forest to our hotel, about 100m away from the entrance!!

they were very nice, and as you can see, didn't mind that we stored a ton of tools and parts in the pristine rooms....

lots of brits out there, esp as was a weekend, rain and mist were clouding the tracks upper reaches, but we still went in, and just had to get a cheeky lap in before night fell, after all, you have to earn that sticker!

the car park as you would expect is a showroom for all that is exotic, fast and insanely fast, and the next three days just got better and better, although as my speed went up, so does the risk......

and so it came to pass, i was burning down into biedschied, easy left hander, no problem...i hit oil, back stepped out, and i span, luckily the front drivers wheel caught the grass enough to slow me down, but i had come mighty close to a very expensive disaster...

still i stopped just in time, and carred on a little slower, and bit more cautiously, for about 0ne lap, befre the devil reappeared and blasted out another two!!!

back in the car park, said hello to sabine, and all too quick it was over, and we were speeding westwards for home.

what a weekend, thrills, spills, and all sorts, was great to see almost every supercar out there, as well as many others from all over the world, giving the track hell.

will i go back.......one day, with better brakes, suyspension, tyres, wheels and skills

Wow Jai.

That is a great report with good pics too. It must have been a great opportunity to meet the Nurburgring lady, Sabine in her M5.

Nice report, good pictures.
Truly Nurburgring is the mother of all tracks, have wanted to do it always, may be someday!

Jay, could you please provide details of your Uno Turbo, as I also have an Uno and would like to prep her up.

Nice write up & mainly solid & stunning pictures !!!
Nurburgring just rocks as usual as Schumi also used to tell the same after every F1 GP here.
try to give some engine pics of your Uno Turbo along with some technical details & also technical specifications of Uno Turbo.

cheers all, mine is a 1988, MK1 phase 2 Fiat Uno Turbo i.e.

1301cc, SOHC, electronic fuel injection, intercooled, IHI turbocharger, front wheel drive, 5 speed, with disc bakes all round, vented at the front.

when it was first made, fiat claimed 105bhp from the engine, and a top speed of 125mph, 0-60 of 8secs.....where permitted

this one has been rolling road tested to 137bhp, has a cone filter, uprated plugs, oil cooler, strut brace at the front, 30mm lowering springs all round.

for more info on the uno, i would go to:

I am here! This thread has all the makings of a great one. I get mesmerised by Track days and descriptions of them.

Of course, I shall keep an eagle eye out for tips on mods for Fiats.

Cheers,

still shattered from the weekend and the drive back, coupled with an extreme bout of flu, i'm waiting for a video clip of me spinning to post up (does the site accept links into youtube?) along with an account of my ham fisted attempts to get my times under 11:30, whilst searching for that elusive smooth technique and easy line......

engines, gearboxes, looms, ecus, etc are all available on european ebay sites, you could import the bits and create a franken turbo, but the easier option would be to find a decent one, even with a rotted out shell, and container the lot home, ad re-shell into a local body.

then again there are quite a few running with 2L lancia ad alfa engines, and if you got the skills, a honda B16 v-tech!

we have a lad over here who has dropped a 3L alfav6 into the back of a panda (baby uno),

actually come to think of it, fiat releasing the grandepunto and 500 in india anyway, find one with the 1.4 t-jet, thats had a major crash, so long as the engineand ancillaries are goo, swap it in......

Nurburgring is a dream for me, a distant one for sure at that. Have done countless laps on GT4 but driving the real thing in a real car sure beats the hell out of any simulator. Great effort, driving any car around a lap of green hell would be a challenge- be it an Uno Turbo or a Gumpert Apollo. Good that you didn't have a meeting with the dreaded Armco. Would have been an expensive affair.

And the cherry on the cake is Sabine, she's a German but what the heck.

You didn't go for a lap in the M5 Ring Taxi shotgun with her? Would have been an experience of a lifetime. Oh I so want to go to Nurburgring now... More pics please if possible. Thanks.
