BMW to exit F1 after end of '09 season

BMW looks set to rock the Formula One world on Wednesday morning by announcing it will withdraw from the sport at the end of 2009.

International media have been summoned to a press conference at the German marque's Munich headquarters at 10am - less than three hours' time - to discuss "current developments in motor sport".

Looks like they want to be engine suppliers - shades of Ford Cosworth in the seventies.

It is sad to see them go. I somehow think this was on the cards since their split from Williams two seasons ago they haven't really impressed.

Will have vivid memories of JP Montoya at the wheel of the Williams-BMW and his challenging Ferrari for the championship.

+1 . Kubica , the ideal guy to replace Massa now.. with nothing still very clear on Schumacher.

Im not surprised at the exit of BMW from F1.Their performence has been dismal and their cars are just not quick enough.PLus all the Budget caps.In the end its the Survival of the Fittest in F1.

Hey they're only leaving at the end of the season. Surely Massa will be back next year? So why would Kubica go to Ferrari? I think Renault or the new teams or Williams (assuming Rosberg replaces Kovy) are more likely. Also there may be a buyer for the outfit just like with Brawn.

This is rather unfortunate. Hope Mosley doesn't bring in some uncompetitive money burning team quickly cobbled together. F1 continues its sheen in my eyes. Just when we were seeing alternatives to Ferrari McLaren domination

very similar to Mercedes's contemplated move. Mercedes is happy with the performances of force india and brawn and they are contemplating leaving Mclaren F1 and end up just an engine supplier.

This is just not done. BMW - with that ultimate driving machine tagline - and its grand F1 entry in 2000 cannot turn back so late in the game. FIGHT, BMW, fight! Else, Its advantage Mercedes who will, in all certainty, reconsider their decision of divorcing Mclaren.

And as an F1 lunatic, it saddens me to see yet another manufacturer leave the sport.
