...to take all the above pix , I had parked up on a hill which was close to the essess and then walked around turn 6, 7 and the back stretch. while doing all this, I did not realize that time was running out..we were approaching the closure of the day..just then, I got a call from Adam " hey av, the last group is almost finishing , you may want to take pix at turn 3 coz the event photographer was perched up there.."
I had to make my way there..which I did..took the in roads and reached the spot..I parked close by and guess what..silence..utter silence..damn event closed for the day. that indeed was a good spot for pix and I had to make my way back..while driving back, I pass by an exit on to the track..
this is the path recovery trucks use to take damaged cars away..the marshals who were sitting there made their way out..the 1st car pulled into the track..now ..wait a minute..onto the track? why ? wasn't he supposed to drive on the in-roads and get back? no ? another marshal was still there..I pulled up and with no time waste I asked " aah..I need to get back to the paddocks...can i drive back on the track ? I just saw him pull out (pointing to the other marshal who drove off ).." ..he said " well, I didn't see you go by..just have your flashers on .."
booyakasha !! I was on the track !! on a freakin' race track used only a few weeks earlier by Lemans series who drove by at 180 mph..what speed could I be doing ? now my car is not particularly pepped up for such a drive..its a camry..it is only meant to take people from A to B in reasonable comfort and give trouble free running and good FE..did it know what a track is ? hell no..!!
but now was the moment..
suddenly only one thing pops in my head..speed..i need speed to have some fun around the high speed turns..oh btw , my car is an automatic and therefore the only control i can have is the throttle..and all I did was mash the throttle..the V6 in my camry immediately responded and gave me my due g-forces..all that was worth a few seconds..
The esses told me that a camry's spot is the highway..not the track..I shat bricks when my car seriously understeered and almost pushed me out of the track..****..
..backed off a bit from 80-70 and hit turn 5..this time , I almost got it right..lift off a bit into the turn and got the car back in line but the body roll was excessive and made it highly uncomfortable and felt dangerous..that is what a higher speed and soft suspension does..then came the high speed turn 6..I was determined to do it right..now remember this is the 1st time I've ever driven on a track..well, apart from go-karts..
Turn 6 looks good from the side of the track but being in a car at speed..no way..I shat bricks again..my car is definitely not a confidence builder.it behaved skittish ..turn 7 is a slow turn and I had to brake hard..ABS kicked in and bought me back from the possible lock up..car still understeered and hit the kerbs on the outside..that's it..I had it..the next part was the backstretch which is high speed and this follows into a dip and down the hill is a sharp left hander chicane..I knew that and I did not want to risk it..insurance guys will laugh at me if I go to them for a claim if I busted my car..
shut up and drove like a drive around the country side..stayed at 55 mph..it was slow enough to take this video !!
went back and sighed a huge relief and then, ended my day..drove back to ATL with one more achievement down my belt.
Adam and Russell stayed back coz they had a Porsche Club dinner meet..I was out of there by then.
and that ended my Porsche Track day @ Road Atlanta.
