Namaste Everyone

After several years of anonymously browsing Team-BHP, its time to take the plunge !! I am Binoy Nair, have a PhD in data mining, work for a University in the South, love all kinds of cars, and have been working on some aspects of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems for past few years. Garage is currently getting ready for a new Nexon after bidding a tearful adieu to the ol' reliable Wagon-R that had begun to show its age after 7 years and nearly one and a quarter lakh kilometers on the odo. Hope I will be able to make some positive contribution to this excellent forum.

Thank you for accepting me into the family !!

Thats some interesting stuff you are working on. Would love to hear about it someday (if its possible). In the future, the personal mobility sector will mostly be using autonomous tech. Most high-end cars today come with some sort of assistance tech or the other.

Ah, the humble ol' WagonR! Most folks I know have some memory associated with the WagonR. While the 800 was more popular and emotional to many, the WagonR was the inconspicuous car getting all the work done. Glad to know it served you and your family well for 7 years!

The Nexon is a good upgrade from the WagonR. Do start an ownership thread once you bring her in.

Looking forward to your posts Binoy. Before you begin though, do take a look at the forum rules once.

Thank you. There is quite a lot to share. These are exciting times for anyone interested in anything related to automobiles!! Getting the Nexon delivered is turning out to be an adventure in itself. Will post all the details for sure. And yes, will try my level best to abide by the rules of the forum, I assure all my fellow BHPians of that.

Welcome Binoy,

Nice area of research, PhD at right time in the right field is made in heaven. Should I ask you the same million dollar question all PhDs love debating over career ? Academics vs Industry, why academics ?

Nexon is a good choice, given the 5 star NCAP rating, eager to know which variant you chose, petrol or diesel ?, manual or AMT ?

Its basically a matter of temperament, I guess. The pressure to get funding and publications is constantly there like the sword of Damocles and pay-wise, there is no comparison at all. We get paid peanuts compared to what my friends in industry get. However, the upside is, the environment is usually far less cut-throat than what I have seen in the corporate world and it's a just a little bit more laid back. Which means- no midnight calls from your client in USA/UK/RoW who has suddenly decided that he needs a new feature added to the product and needs it to be done by tomorrow.
So, its basically swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Thank you !! Its a leap of faith.. all of my extended family is made up of Maruti loyalists, so there were a few raised eyebrows when I announced my switch to Tata. Lets hope for the best.
