Finally an active member - Hello from a highway design engineer!

Dear all,
After being a passive member for quite a long time, now I am an active member. I belong to Jaipur but started my career in Delhi in 2000 as Highway Design Engineer. After 16 years, I decided to relocate myself to Jaipur and started my own firm. As Highway Engineer I have traveled across whole country. Few unusual places are Mizoram, Nagalang, Uttarkashi, Indo - Pak Borders (Firozpur, Longewala and Munabao) etc. Spent countless number of days (and nights in many occasions) on various Indian highways. I have designed many highways and now few expressways too.
I love to travel on our highways. My preferred vehicle for this purpose is Fortuner when I am on official visits. But for my personal visits, I prefer mean machine with raw power i.e. Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI.
That's all folks , I would be more than happy to help if anyone seeks any advice related to Highways (design elements, rules and regulations etc).
Regards,
Noopster

Welcome to the forum! Your job sounds very interesting, and it would be a delight to hear more about it -- especially in discussions about road safety & the accidents thread!

That's a every interesting career choice and must I say quite fascinating too. As a regular highway user (as most of us on Team-BHP are), there at times when I wondered what could be the reasons for a particular alignment of the highway, or what decisions and best practices are done to make road travel more safe, etc.

Wow! I would request you to please start a thread on the topic - Highway design (how, where, what). I'm sure it would be super useful to many of us.

Nice vehicles you have got there - the dependable, go anywhere work horse in the Toyota and the powerful sedan in the Skoda. Since your mileage on the Fortuner must be high, would love to know about your ownership experiences on the truck.

Let me tell you one very interesting fact that most common questions that arise in common user's mind are -
"Oh this is such a risky curve"
"Why don't they give a bypass for this city"
"why so many speed restrictions ?"
"Why not concrete pavement here ?"

There are always a reason for all above. Mostly a technical reason but some times a political or public demand may also force us to design an alignment accordingly.

Every question will have a valid answer. Feel free to ask if you have any. Just give me a photo of the location (coordinates may be OK, I will check on Google) and tell me your doubt.

Question to Moderators - How about starting a thread regarding doubts/questions/concerns related to any specific part of any highway alignment or any question related to highway design and Pavement (Concrete top/Bituminous top) Design.

Oh man, it's too late now. Isn't it ?
Running of the two vehicles are - T-Fort - 1.61 Lacs, Rapid - 1.2 Lacs

Would love to see a thread on the different road surfaces.

You can go ahead and start creating one in the Assembly Line if you are inclined to.

The average person would just classify the different road surfaces as "concrete" vs "tarmac" -- but I imagine there's an array of types?

Would love to know the differences between them in terms of:
- Cost of construction
- Lifespan
- Tyre wear & traction
- Which do you think is better & why?
- etc

Thanks!
