The Esteem is an affordable big car if you can accept that initial "sitting almost on the road" feeling. Changing over from the Wagon R will certainly make you feel so. But you will love the large boot.
If you can afford to wait for a few more months you could look at how SX4 is doing in the market and then go for it. It looks like it has all the great features going for it. But I would never recommend a freshly launched car. Let it prove itself on the roads and then go for it.
By the way, 6 years ago Maruti used to give quality accessories, which you will not find now. In their effort to keep costs low they compromise with the quality of the fittings (engine and gear boxes are superb though). Small things but they matter. My wiper blade, for example, gave way in the second monsoon and I discovered this in the middle of a two hour long extremely heavy thunderstorm on the highway where I could neither stop the car nor the wiper. This resulted in a major bow like scratch on the windscreen. A bad Rs 120 fitting spoilt something that costs Rs 7500.
Before this I drove a Zen for three years and the fittings were absolutely great.

HI gava and welcome to the Team-BHP community. Do search through the "What car" and "Reviews" section for opinions / reviews on all the sedans available in the Indian market.

Also, please do visit the board rules section to familiarise yourself with our forum protocol.
