That means it is the standard system as found in most cars.
In which case what I had posted earlier is correct. And basically there would be TWO valves in the radiator cap.

How does it get back into the radiator when the coolant contracts on cooling? There's a spring loaded valve in the way, fitted for the wrong direction, remember!

So is there another valve that enables the reverse flow? Yes there is a vacuum valve and if this jams, coolant can never get back into the radiator, bent pipe or not!
And, if the radiator has even a small leak, vacuum will never build up to open the vacuum breaker valve; instead atmospheric air will keep getting inducted whenever the coolant contracts on cooling!
Am I missing something?

Dadu, is this the kind of system?

The pipe from radiator cap is connected to the bottom of the coolant tank.
The pipe at the top of the coolant tank is the overflow pipe.
Anyways, she is back, autolinks people delivered it around 8pm.
New radiator. Sounding much smoother now. They did some adjustments for erratic idle, so I will know only tomorrow morning if it really is okay now.
Tomorrow I get a new tire also from KB

LOL, no one said anything about morning sickne...err..start, it was about cold start!
Lil' silly to assume that it happens in the morning! lol:

Well it always starts properly, just a little grrr grrr, but then beasts do grrr grrr, right.
Anyways today I started at noon, so no issues, early morning starts...? I don't have any idea, will do and see. Even if it does, no big deal, its been doing that since 10K kms :p

Anyways I did more than 100kms today. She behaving fine, hopefully this continues, couple of long drives should do the trick, and verify that things are really okay!

That article posted by Jaggu would have you believe that coolant from the expansion tank will not go back to the radiator. Hence the confusion.

Arre i did not post it to confuse you, i was referring the more modern system on assumption that you know of the older systme. Simple explanation is here for the older system HowStuffWorks "How Car Cooling Systems Work" but its too brief and doesnt mention the more modern systems. The cap has two circuits, a pressure valve and a vacuum line (some have thermostatic valve also on the cap).

Safari system is a mix of both, mostly due to lack of space (me guess). For the pressurized overflow tank to work, i understand the tank itself has to be at a higher level than the radiator upper chamber. This might be the reason why they went the complex hybrid path.

Anyways back to Tanveer, hope you have a peaceful drive this time around. What happened to the "Infamous" tube, is it IN or OUT now. How about the oil leak, suspension sound etc, all sorted?

The new tube is "out".
I will let it be that way.
Suspension sound went away on changing tie rod end.
And oil leak has also gone.
It was at the joint of 2 pipes.

Tanveer,

How was the early morning start and did you drive it around.

Any new developments on your Safari:)

It was okay, but then the temp was high due to sunlight.
since she's behaving properly now, things should be okay.
Keeping my fingers crossed. One longish trip planned before the 15K service

With the breakdown behind her, and the radiator changed I hope most of the troubles are over.
Things to do now
1. New Tyre. will get it today
2. Try to getup at 5am and check cold start surging problem(this is difficult)
3. When I visit service center check which error code is there. Since service light was coming on I suspect there may be some error code

15K service is just a couple of weekends away. Am already planning a long trip. If I complete 14K by this weekend, will service her sometime next week, otherwise its after the trip.

Instead of coolant there is water in radiator, as they want to check if she is still loosing water. There seems to be no sign of any such troubles for now!

LOL, good to see a short & simple title without the diseased horses & nightmares:)

Good luck & hopefully its all behind you now. Start driving!
