re: 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 GL chugging along at 1,05,000 kms and 15 years

Thanks ChoosetoCruze. The manual mentions mapmyindia.

is it possible to use android auto on this vehicle?.

Rather than going through the whole hassle of what you’ve suggested, why not just keep things very simple? Just switch your HID bulbs to a lower temperature - 4300K (which is yellow, compared to your stock 6000K?)

Most halogen headlight assemblies use H4 bulbs which may be different from the stock HID + ballasts + reflector setup provided by Toyota.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

1. As far as I know, a module needs to be wired into the central locking system. Just for the ease of keeping warranty intact & a dealer fitted accessory, you might as well get it installed by them.
2. Does your car have maps provided by Garmin? If yes, this may be helpful - https://toyota.garmin.com/site/generalInstructions

I’d rather use maps from my phone via CarPlay rather than have to keep updating the SD card every year.

Once, I change the whole setup, I'll post it here.

Cheers
Why go to halogen? The 4300K HID's in corolla are perfectly fine and offer very good visibility. Much better than the halogens.

Your problem is the cheap LED's. Go back to the original HID's as the reflectors in the GL variant are meant for HID's.

The lower G models have different reflectors designed for halogen bulbs.

I don’t think the stock Corolla HU supports Android Auto. Actually, I’m not sure.

Have a look in your owner’s manual and check if it supports mirror link.

Try contacting mapmyindia directly with your HU model number if you want to pursue getting their updates. This may or may not be helpful for you - https://www.mapmyindia.com/map-update/

I echo Vid6639’s words above, it’s the cheap LEDs which are at fault here. HIDs provide the best light output especially with genuine/OEM 4300K bulbs.

These are the OE bulbs spec:

https://www.amazon.in/Osram-HID-4150...s%2C287&sr=8-2

However the car comes with Philips which is slightly more whiter than this.

That’s why I want to change the whole headlight assembly to a halogen one which are available for the lower variants of Corolla.

That, indeed will take a bit of effort. So, I could revert back to HIDs. There is slight problem with that. The only trace of ‘HID was here’ in my car is the retainer clip where the HID would sit. Rest all the other bits are nowhere to be found.

If you can, please share some photos of your HID setup (all the way from the cap that needs to be rotated to open to access the HID bulb, to what’s inside the housing). That’d be really helpful as it will help me find the parts (connectors, ballast, bulb holder and whatnot).

Why not go to Toyota? They just do not want to take a look at it. ‘We’ll replace it for an exorbitantly high price, sir’, I’ve been hearing this.

I’d be really thankful for the inputs.

Cheers!

I checked in the manual. It says it supports Mirror Link and Miracast.

I tried the Mirror Link option but i don't know which Mirror Link app to download on my smartphone. There are plenty of Mirror Link apps available on Google store.
I am assuming that only some versions or some apps will be supported.

Please advise.

This is a tutorial for the Yaris sedan, but it should be similar for your Corolla too -

You have to download the TLink app as explained in the video.

I hope this works for you.

If it doesn’t work, maybe some other owners who are already running mirrorlink in their Toyota vehicles can chime in too.

Also, the steps to connect your phone via mirrorlink/miracast should be mentioned in your owners’ manual.

re: 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 GL chugging along at 1,05,000 kms and 15 years

Hi,

I am actually looking to purchase a Toyota Corolla Altis 2009 petrol engine and have received a few pictures but I am not sure if it is the engine that I am looking for. I have a doubt that it is the old Corolla engine. I am attaching the pictures here, please help me understand if it is actually the Altis 2009 engine.

Thank you!

Yes, this is the 1ZZ-FE engine that was the engine model for Corolla Altis model years 2008-2011 both inclusive. IIRC TKM dropped in the new 2ZR-FE engine between in 2012 or 2013.

The 1ZZ-FE engine in the picture is from the 9G Corolla 2003-2008. The give away is the cable actuated throttle. The Altis starting 2008 has electronic throttle control and a small boost in power from 123 BHP/125 PS to 130 BHP/132 PS. The 2ZR-FE with dual VVTi upped the output to 138 BHP/140 PS.

re: 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 GL chugging along at 1,05,000 kms and 15 years

I have been looking for the ECM of the 1ZZ-FE Corolla engine but am unable to find one. However, I have found one ECM of the same petrol engine (i.e. 1ZZ-FE 1.8 Corolla) but it belongs to the automatic version of the Corolla engine. Is it okay to use the automatic engine ECM with my manual 1ZZ-FE engine? Can you please help with its pros and cons? Will I need to be extra careful about some things? Will it affect the performance?

Or would it be preferable to install the aftermarket Race Dynamics R200 standalone ECU with the 1ZZ-FE engine?

No, you cannot install an ECU of a car with an auto tranny into a car with a manual gearbox. AFAIK these are not compatible as there will be an ECU interface with the gearbox and/or its control unit whether in a torque converter or CVT type transmission. The ECU is probably flashed with a different firmware.

re: 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 GL chugging along at 1,05,000 kms and 15 years

I have finally found a manual Corolla ECM but the engine is from the year 2002-2003 while the ECM is from the year 2004-2005 (not too sure). I have a doubt as to whether the ECM has an oxygen sensor. Can you guide as to how I can check if the ECM does actually have the oxygen sensor? And if it does, can we just cut the wire off since the engine is from an older model or do we need to add a connection of the oxygen sensor to the engine?

I would also like to know if there is a way to find out which year the ECM belongs to from the details on it?

I am attaching pictures of the ECM and the engine for your reference.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!!

ALL petrol Corolla models have oxygen sensors as do other cars.

The ECU part # is from the Jan 2003- Dec 2004 model. From 8/2004 to 12/2005 the ECU part # is 89661-02C80. You can get the details at this page:

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM for TOYOTA COROLLA E120 9TH GEN (2003-2008)

There were probably additional (Euro 3) emission control measures in the latter model ECU. So you need to be absolutely sure what model that engine is and match it with the exact same model ECU.

And remember you may not be able to fit that engine in the 2008/09 Altis. As I mentioned before the Altis comes with a electronic throttle control while the 9G Corolla has a cable operated throttle. Of course someone may be able to do some modifications/jugaad for you.

There are also differences in the alternator, headlamp (HID depending on trim), drivers side power seat, electric power steering among others which the old alternator may/may not be able to handle. The battery was also upgraded from 35 to 45 AH. Hope you have planned around these subtle but important differences.

I am curious - what happened to the factory fitted engine of this Altis?

re: 2009 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 GL chugging along at 1,05,000 kms and 15 years

Hello all,
I have a 2009 altis petrol that has been run for 55k kms and still seems as if it bought yesterday. Of late I have noticed that the FE has dropped to about 10 in the city as against 12-13. I have already changed the oil to shell HX8 5W-30 synthetic , with new air filter. Should I be replacing the spark plugs? Currently, I have the original ones in the engine which are supposed to run 80k.
Any other pointers that I could work with to get the fe back? I am a bit skeptical about doing an engine flush given the age of the car.
