Hasn't worked for a lot of BHPians.

I have not seen the rat problem on my car for the last 2 months, though the car has been standing still.

I think it was due to the cementing work done by my neighbor who covered up a hole in the process.

So, instead of trying to focus on the car, you could try to simply cover off the holes in the vicinity. Then the rats would probably have to find new places to stay and could actually forget your car.

I have tired all of these: Tobacco packets, phenol, diesel wash, shampoo wash, napthelene balls. Some of them gave temporary relief. Others simply did not work.

Just wanted to provide an update for others in the same situation.

The tar-brush border seems to be working well (*touch wood*). Just came back from a drive and used the smartphone torch to go through every nook & cranny of the car. No droppings or damage anywhere.

By reading incidents of Rat attacks on car wiring as a result one is left with a big hole in his pocket . I am contemplating on the following spray from amazon, has anyone tried it-

Does the Rat repellent spray really works as claimed?

Rats messed up my Civic's main engine wiring and i ran into to a hefty bill fix the issues.





Taking a Que from Tanveer's Tar brush idea i have fixed same in my Civic's engine bay today. Plus to that my mechanic also smeared grease on the wires.





One of the mechanic's was of the opinion that this might not be a good idea and in case of ( i hope it never happens) a short circuit the brush could be prone to catching fire.

Read the sad incident on the Civic thread. Sumeet, have you tried keeping tobacco in the engine bay? That should help I guess. Also, I keep a rat mesh inside the car whenever I find proof of rats! Almost everytime, one gets caught!

Thanks i had put in tobacco just a day ago before the incident. Infact i even had cleaned the engine bay that day but what was to happen, happened.Hopefully no more rat problems henceforth touchwood.

That looks really bad. Really sad.

Apart from our kitten having turned into a hunter, which is probably the main protection (but has also sadly reduced our small-bird count) I am keeping the light on in the parking area. There is also some tobacco leaf on the ground under the engine, but it probably needs replacing by now.

I have used this idea for 2 years in my previous xuv 500, 1 year in my New xuv 500 and for 2 years in my VW Jetta, And i have faced no issues, All you gotta do is cover all the places where the rat would sit or where there are wires, Just make sure the tar is not rubbing agains't any thing, And there is a bit of gap left, Also make sure the Tar brush is securely tightened, Rest i am sure you will be free of rat problems.:thumbs up

What I wanted to ask from you is where and how many of these tar brushes are we supposed to install? I recently purchased Innova Crysta and I have seen rats roaming around in the parking lot so wanted to be safe than sorry.

Did you get yours install from roadside mechanic or from service center guys? thanks!

Hello ! Well i am glad its helping many of us, Hope its helping some non-members too, We can finally end this topic forever.

There isn't any specific number, Mostly depends on how much space your engine bay has, For instance i have installed around 5 on my XUV 500 with great difficulty since the engine bay of the XUV is pretty tight on space, On the other hand have fixed 6 inside my VW Jetta, Since i could safely put them, Still if i had to put a number to your question i would say atleast 4 and maximum 6-7 depending on the space available, Just ensure the strap is securely fixed, Atleast 2 straps on each brush.

It can be a DIY but i strongly recommend getting it done through a mechanic since the tar brush can literally hurt you instantly with a single light touch! So let the mechanics handle it, Ask them to wear a glove too if they have.
