All you need is a 12V socket.
After that you can buy a charger for your particular brand of cell phone.

I got a multi phone recharger kit (chinese make) from one of those shops in Penta menaka (kochi version of Nehru place - only for mobile phones and accessories).

Two long cords - both 12 V for use on car, and a 220V one which fits into 5A socket, which charges the common Nokia phones. And a kit of adapters, which plug into the "nokia" end of the long cord, There are 15 or 16 such adapters, each on approx 3 inch wire. (Hope I have described it correctly).

Mithun- Please be very careful while getting the socket installed. Only last week i was left stranded on the road for 3 hours as due to improper installation of the socket+lighter( Xenos original ) -a particular wire was shot and hence the swift refused to start as the circuit broke. It had to be towed to M.A.S.S. All because of poor installation of a socket.

My indica did not have a 12V socket.
Therefore when I got it installed, I told the installer not to touch any wiring. The socket was a direct connection to battery.
Downside : Its always on, so if I leave some heavy duty stuff connected over night, battery will discharge
Upside : No wiring etc., issues

tsk1979 : A Maruti guy told me that the female plug socket may not be able to accommodate all the male plugs of chargers. He also told me that he will connect it to the point where the stereo power cable originates.

Sometimes, not all cellphone's chargers fit into the socket, so its best you test a sample before you buy it. I've had problems integrating a Nokia charger into the socket in the A-Star.

Well, thats how Ford have wired the 12V socket by default on my Ikon. I was surprised the first time i noticed it.

@mithun - probably around INR 250. Or may be less. I am rather stingy, so I believe that I would not pay anything more. Pics -- I need to find the remaining connectors - I now use only the long wire and the connector for my phone. ;-)

Guys I have an Etios Liva GD. It has a factory fitted 12V socket which I use mainly for the GPS unit. Can I get one more socket installed on the dash to be used for mobile charging ? Or alternatively are any distribution adaptors available in the market ?

Actually, rather than getting an additional one fitted on the dashboard, you can probably try getting something similar to this. It should solve your purpose.

I purchased an all phone friendly charger from vicky.in seing a post on this forum which slots into the accessory socket in my Swift and works fine. It cost me around Rs 400 almost a year back but has seen in similar chargers in shops for a much lesser price these days.

I got a cigarette lighter and a multi-pin phone charger for Rs. 399/- from Reliance Automart about an year ago. The fitting was not even a 2 min job provided that your car wiring harness has not been tampered with. Its connected via fuse and comes on only with the acc. position. My Nokia E63 works pretty well with it, but My wife's Samsung (new model) does not charge with this system. Also the cheaper LG Reliance CDMA phones act crazy with it plugged in. It will go on & off several times making it which practically makes it unusable. Working fine with my Nokia though.

If you are only using it to charge mobile phones, then you don't have to worry about it overloading the system.

How much of load it will be able to handle is another issue. I don't have much idea about that.
