TRIUMPH appears to have confirmed at the Delhi Auto Expo that it intends to build smaller-capacity bikes within the next three years.

Speaking to Indian news site Business Standard, the managing director of Triumph's newly launched Indian operation, Ashish Joshi, revealed the firm has a six-year product plan with 'a few' lower capacity machines scheduled in. He's quoted as saying of the plan: “It has got a few new bikes. They are of lower capacity” and confirming that “the development time is three years.”

Stories of a small single-cylinder Triumph – speculatively called the Street Single in some corners – have been doing the rounds for some time. Small machines have been spotted testing at the factory, but no decent pictures have yet emerged to reveal whether they're prototypes of a new Triumph or rival brand bikes being 'benchmark' tested to gauge the needs of the new model.

Rumours suggest the new single will have a capacity in the 250-350cc bracket, and that it will be assembled in plants both in India and Brazil. Referring to the hopes of big-bore bikes in India, Joshi is reported as saying: “I believe the 250cc-500cc engine bikes will always sell in better numbers.”

Initially, the single-cylinder Triumph is expected to be a straightforward naked machine, following the styling cues of the Street Triple. However, the suggestion now appears to be that there will be several models, so don't be surprised if a small Tiger (Cub?) appears, or even a CBR250R-rivalling miniature Daytona.

Business Standard also repeats the swirling rumours that Harley-Davidson is planning a smaller model for the Indian market.

A Single Cylinder triumph can look like this

Looks good to me if i block out the weird looking headlights that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Now being a single, I hope they price it well and not command a premium on it. Unless they want to sell it only to the premium segment and not every average joe.

A 500cc mill would be nice. But seriously, why not a twin?

P.S. Remove the "Triumph" decals from the tank and it looks very similar to the FZ. Doesn't it?

Maybe they will join hands with Hero and do it!

14L for 150cc? You must be joking :) or not gone through those long Triumph threads.
They already shown their aggrasive pricing of their premium bikes which i felt very good for us. They might produce 250-500 cc for their new market and yes if people are ready to pay why not singles and twins as well may be 250, 350 and 500 capacity range.

One more good news:

An Italian bike magazine, Motociclismo, reported that Triumph is working on development of a 350cc single cylinder engine, adding to it the magazine also mentioned that Triumph would assemble the bike in its Thailand plant.

The magazine says that a 350cc Triumph motorcycle is also said to be headed to Brazil, through Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits from Thailand. Now, this development is quite interesting for the very fact that Triumph is all set to enter India very soon.

And the same could be expected for India as a 350 cc CKD bike from Triumph for Indian market.

The 250-350 cc engine with Electronic Fuel Injection system is likely to produce an estimated 27 to 32 BHP of power. It will be mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

The rear is likely to get a mono-shock suspension with adjustable settings.

The bike is supposed to be named as Triumph Street 300, and the same name could be used for India.

My word of advice to Triumph India is to bring it as early as possible – this is what the Indian bikers are looking for and considering the specs, if they can manage to price it in range of 2 to 2.3 Lacs this can really be the next dream bike for Indian bikers.

Pricing plays a big part here. I reckon it'll take them at least a year or two before they plonk this one here. Hopefully they set up a lot more dealers than just the planned four or five across the country.

The Triumph seems to be setting their house perfectly, wish they cut down the lead time of 3 years. Realistically 1.4 should be a killer price for a 350CC Triumph.

I am sure it will take over two years as it will take one year for them to settle down with 4 dealers and 7 launches which they have announced in autoexpo. In two to three years, we should be seeing 10 to 15 triumph dealers in india.

It looks like Triump has got an ambitious plan for india. It is good for us. More competition hence more launches.
1.4Lacs will be less IMO because a duke 200CC may be sold for that price. Add 30 to 40% to it and you will arrive at a reasonable price.

For triumph, who are best known for the fantastic street triples the logical step down would be a 500 cc parallel twin in streetfighter clothes.

Back in the day, all brit superbikes like Norton/Brough had fire breathing twins.

The Triumph India site has mentioned that they are planning to open dealerships in Delhi/Mumbai & Bangalore by July-August '12.

8 dealerships to open next year in Pune, Goa, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Jaipur & Chennai.

Triumph would do well to not get into the commuter bike segment. IMO they should go only as far as a 500 twin.

It will be interesting to see what they sell in India.

I reciently took a new 2012 U.S.A. version of a Truimph Bonneville for a 30 mile (48 km) test ride.

This is a fuel injected 865cc twin with a 5 speed transmission and to say it has a lot of power would be an understatement.

The one thing it did not have was sound.

It was so quiet that at an idle I couldn't even hear it running.
Under acceleration it was also totally silent. No roar, no thump, no nothing! :-(

My BMW K-75 was louder.

When I returned the bike to the dealer I asked him if the T-100 Bonneville was louder because it has silencers that look much like the Gold Star bottles.
His answer? "No. It isn't any louder."

He did say that there were aftermarket silencers available and they could remap the computer to accommodate them but when spending that much money I hoped Triumph would at least offer them for free. No such deal.

I am not "into" excessively loud exhaust pipes but I think a aircooled Triumph twin should at least sound like one of the originals.

Hopefully they will realize how you riders in India love the sound of a strong motorcycle (as we in the US do) but based on what they are trying to sell us, I wouldn't get my hopes up. :Frustrati
