Yamaha to work on world's cheapest motorcycle Great news from Yamaha which plans to design and manufacture the world's cheapest motorcycle at a price point of 500USD from its Indian facilities. Plan is to also set up it's fifth R&D facility in the world, at Chennai and "launch a new scooter model each year till 2016". Source
Yamaha intends the bike to be equipped with nothing lower than a 100CC engine (so it won't be a moped) and plans to work on low cost spares.
I'm happy that Yamaha has finally understood the need for commuter motorcycles in order to get sales volumes, and given that their current set of entry level motorcycles don't seem to excite us Indians much, this new low cost motorcycle might just do the trick.
However, when great ideas meet with great realities, you have the "Nanos" of the world. Let's see how this ends up for Yamaha.
