Yamaha launches 5th Global R&D Center at Surajpur, UP-yamaha.jpg

Yamaha has established the 'Yamaha Motor Research and Development India (YMRI)' Center at Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh. YMRI will be the fifth overseas R&D center for Yamaha following Italy, Taiwan, China and Thailand.

YMRI will function as the core of the second Integrated Development Center, following the establishment of the ASEAN Integrated Development Center in Thailand last year. The new R&D Center aims to contribute to India's operations by "change drawings", tailoring changes to the design, maintenance and production standards, to fit the Indian market and provide low-cost models to customers.

Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & Managing Director, Yamaha India said, “This will help us not only to develop models and parts for India, but also for export markets”. Future plans include the setting up of a new Chennai site to develop domestic & export models, based on platforms developed in Japan.

The Indian motorcycle market reached around 14 million units in 2012, overtaking China to become the world's No.1. The market is expected to grow further, reaching 16 million units in 2015. Yamaha India sold 350,000 units in 2012. The company targets sales of 500,000 units in 2013, and 1 million units by 2015.
