My Son's Quad Bike / ATV with a 49cc 2 stroke engine

Synopsys

Hello fellow Petrol Heads,

Its been very long since I wrote anything on the forum, Extremely sorry for that! I plan to retire early so doing multitude of things lately, but not illegal that is.

My son is turning 6 this month. And he is a born petrol head. He likes to have anything and everything related to cars. Even his bed sheets, mugs plate and pillows have pictures of cars on them. He watches Disney/Pixar Cars like a million times and his tablet has like hundreds of games all related to cars.

So I was on a hunt for a small ride-on car or quad. I called Fisher Price/Amazon.com but they declined to deliver in India. They have a beautifully made electric Jeep....exact copy of a Hurricane. Alas! We Indians can only drool over it. Like we drool over other v8 powered 4x4s. So, with lot of digging here and there, I found this efficient guy from Surat who imports these Chinese make Quads for kids. Its heavy, thus transportation is an issue. But finally it came on top of a bus, thanks to a friend who owns a Bus service.

Specifications (copied from its owners manual)
Engine : 49CC Single Cylinder 2 Stroke, Air Cooled
Autobox, No reverse
Chain drive, driving the rear wheel. no 4x4
Electric Start + pull start
It doesn't have an alternator to charge the battery, so comes with a 12 volt electric adaptor.
Fuel Tank Capacity: 1.1L
Brakes: Disc all around
Front/Rear Tyre: 13x5.0 on 6" steel wheels
Dimension: 1000mm x 600mm x 590mm
Wheelbase: 700mm

Few Observations

Its Chinese made, but has a very smart and straightforward design. Surprisingly the chassis build quality is good. Quality of plastic isn't. It took many years for Indian bikes to have Self start & disc brakes. The Chinese managed to put these tiny efficient ones on a kid's toy!

Engine is what I will call not very refined. Has enough torque to pull a 75 kg person easily though. Tested!! Throws lot of smoke from its twin exhaust. Manual says engine run-in period is complete when it consume 5 full tanks of Petrol+2T oil. Lets wait and see. They recommend synthetic 2T mix. But I could not locate it as I live in a small place.

I wonder why Indians cannot make this. I am sure Indian makers can do a much better job and with topnotch quality. There is a good market for these. With the kind of response I got with my Instagram upload, I am sure there are tons of Petrolhead fathers around with equally Petrolhead toddlers

I have heard certain good local mechanics in Ahmedabad who make these with CD100 and Kinetic engines. But could not locate them, and I hate Jugaads.

Final Words

Son is away on vacation. I am sure he'll like it when he returns by the time of his birthday. I am sure that he will have that 'There are somethings money can't buy kinda Smile' or as we Biz-man say 'Paisa Wasool' type of smile.

PS Again: This comes semi-assembled, The tool that comes with it, I threw them in the bin. So you need to have some good tools around and of course knowledge on how to use them. Or you can find your friendly neighbourhood mechanic guy!

We heard the legend about the Willy's Jeep in a crate back in WW2. Well! This Quad came packed in a very sturdy cardboard box, along with lots of bubble wrap - Semi assembled.

It took Mahindra 5 decades to master the front IFS, went pretty orgasmic on it and priced the Thar like..... Blah!

re: My Son's Quad Bike / ATV with a 49cc 2 stroke engine

Excellent stuff. Now it seems like I wanna get married, just so I can have kids who can ride this around.

I remember people using puny 2 stroke engines here in Ooty, around a small garden track to give kiddos they rush the need (me included), fun times indeed. But we as a society are getting bigger and better, I guess it's the right time for manufacturers to introduce weekend blast machines such as these, I am sure it would have a decent following.

Why not try K&N instead of that filter Oh boy, I need that one real bad!

Wish we get this from Mahindra as a combo package, buy XUV or THAR get yourself an ATV mufth. Oh well!

Regards
Vijay

Nice piece of kit for a lucky young kid. The features included are very impressive.

Nice kit - I am tempted to look this up when my kid turns 4 (one more year down the lane). If it is ok, can you give the address of the guy dealing with this and cost of the quad?

Congrats on your purchase. One question though. Isn't the distance between the brake lever and palm grip too much for a 6 year old?

Re: My Son's Quad Bike / ATV with a 49cc 2 stroke engine

WoW this is great! Reminds me of my own story.

When my daughter was eight months and she had barely learnt to sit herself I bought her a battery operated scooter from Walmart. She could barely sit on it and was too young and clueless to keep the power button pressed.

So I got a few things such as a two way switch, push switch etc. from radio shack and made sort of a wired remote control. I would walk behind her and use the push button and two switch to control the scooter.

But nowadays wireless remote controlled and ride-able cars are available in India as well, as well all know. I gifted one to my nephew sometime ago.

However I always wanted to buy these mini ATVs. Since my son is quite small I would have to wait sometime though.

How much do these things cost? I should probably look on Aliexpress as well.

Awesome. This piece of machine looks so beautiful and tempting. I wish to buy this for my son as well in next 2-3 years. Can you please share the details of the vendor selling this in Surat. Some doubts, What is the weight of the vehicle. Kids usually don't think and take sharp turns. Hope it wont fall on its side at any point.
What about the tyres. Are they tubeless?
Lovely purchase. Do share the expression of the kid when he gets to see this.

Wow! The best birthday gift a petrol head could possibly get! Boy,am I jealous.
Disc brakes all round is insane! My cars only got 'em on the front. The phrase 'made in China' may not signify cheap fakes anymore
Any idea how much power it makes?

Just Wow!!!

When we were of that age, we would have been content even with a discarded motor cycle tyre! We couldnt even dream of such things then. Times certainly have changed.

Reminds me of Pachmarhi (near Bhopal).
Lost of similar bikes for joy ride available there!
They said they do all the work locally to result in those small wonders.

Damn SirAlec, I wish you were my dad when I was growing up. With the interest in cars he has and a dad like you, I'm sure your son end up becoming someone significant either in the automotive design/manufacture industry or in the racing scene.

Amazing! What a gift! Your son wont be sleeping that well for a few weeks I guess. All you need is a gravel track now.

Is that plastic chain guard misaligned?

Exactly so. I went to Pachmari just a few days ago and saw these. Many adults and children were having a joy ride with these. Though I didn't ride one of these, I had the time of my life taking a Polaris buggy through its paces on an open stretch of abandoned land with ditches and climbs here and there. These ATVs are real fun to drive but should be driven safely. I suggest SirAlec to buy a helmet too.
Cheers,
Neel
