Hero becomes largest exporter of scooters from India

Hero MotoCorp has narrowly beaten Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India to become the country's largest scooter exporter.

In the fiscal 2014-15, the company exported 79,956 scooters, a massive jump (356.24%) from the 17,525 units it had managed in the previous fiscal. 45,000 of the units exported were to cater to a single order from Sri Lanka. In Q2 an Q3 of FY 2014-15, the company is believed to have given the local demand a back seat in order to meet the export demand.

Honda's exports grew as well from 51,932 units to 77,814. However, it could not match its former collaborators growth rate and has had to settle for second place.

With a total of 15,570 scooters exported, TVS lies in a distant third place. Yamaha is in fourth with 6,271 units. Both companies have recorded substantial growth in scooter exports. Overall scooter exports grew by 117.12%.

Re: Hero becomes largest exporter of scooters from India

Who is Hero kidding?

- In the local market, the one that really counts, Honda has over 50% of the scooter market (stats as of 2014). It outsells Hero thrice over. Honda normally sells over 2 lakh Scooters each month in India (far more than Hero's total exports over a year).

- Honda might not be exporting as much from India maybe because they already have local subsidiaries in those markets, or because the Indian unit is focussed primarily on the domestic market only.

Re: Hero becomes largest exporter of scooters from India

This is very interesting. Hero has been pushing too hard to grab that space in scooters market. The initial agreement with Honda, did not allow them to go aggressively as they wished. Honda has captured the scooter market very well, all with one product Activa, and still growing strong.

Hero has been rolling out new products and still have not been able to penetrate well. Now the obvious option would be to export.

It would be interesting to see how all the plans would get rolled in the days to come. TVS too has been making a steady inroads with wego and Jupiter!

Hero's main weapons in the fight are coming out this year though. Next 2-3 years will be very interesting to see.
