Bajaj Avenger 150 Street / 220 Street launched at INR 75,000 / 84,000

New bikes looks good and priced very aggressively in my opinion. Need to ride one now. Hope it will be good. Maruti in 4-wheeler and Bajaj in 2-wheeler always give us VFM products. I guess this can be option for me for replacing my 2007 Pulsar 180

"Bajaj Auto has introduced three new Avengers today – the Avenger 220 Street, the Avenger 220 Cruise and an all-new Avenger 150 Street, which acts as the entry-level model in the Avenger range. The Avenger 150 Cruise is priced at INR 75,000, ex-Showroom, New Delhi. The Bajaj Avenger 150 Street gets a 149 cc DTS-i engine that makes 14.5 PS at 9,000 rpm and 12.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, and has been specifically tuned for city cruising according to Bajaj. The engine is optimized to give high torque at low/mid range, Bajaj said in its presentation. Compared to the Pulsar, the engine offers 10 percent more torque in the low and mid ranges of the powerband."

The Avenger 150 Street uses a 5-speed transmission. It measures 1,480 mm in wheelbase, 2,177 mm in overall length, 801 mm in width, 1,070 mm in height and 169 mm in ground clearance. It has a kerb weight of 148 kg, and rides on 90/90×17 front and 130/90×15 rear tyres. Stopping power comes from a 240 mm front disc and a 130 mm rear drum. Like the 220 cc variants, the Street 150 also gets a 14 liter fuel tank. With the launch of the three new Avengers, Bajaj says that it has upped production from about 5,000 units a month to 20,000 units a month of the Avenger brand.

The 220 Street variant of the 2016 Bajaj Avenger has been launched at INR 84,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). It has been launched alongside the 220 Cruise variant which features a classic chrome theme, and an Avenger 150 Street model which is similar to the 220 Street except for the powertrain. The 220 Street is differentiated from the 150 Street by the red graphic line on the fuel tank and the side cowl. The technical specifications of the 2016 Avenger 220 Street include 2,177 mm of length, 801 mm of width, 1,070 mm of height, 1,490 mm of wheelbase, 169 mm of ground clearance, 150 kg in kerb weight, 14 litres of fuel tank capacity, 260 mm front disc brake, 130 mm rear drum brake, 90/90-17 front tyre and 130/90-15 rear tyre.

The Bajaj Avenger 220 Street is powered by the same 220 cc single-cylinder air-cooled DTS-i engine with an oil-cooler that powered the outgoing version. The power and torque ratings are unchanged, at 19.03 PS at 8,400 rpm and 17.5 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The 5-speed gearbox is also the same. Features on the 220 Street include white hue headlight, clear lens indicators, 12-spoke alloy wheel at the front and 9-spoke alloy at the rear, new Avenger logo and body graphics and a new silencer design.

Come on Bajaj, I was expecting newer generation engines with liquid cooling at the least. Instead they chose to stick to older generation engines. This is merely a mod job instead of an upgrade. (Talking about the 220CC variants)
Anyway I wish Bajaj good luck with their new variants.

220 CC model is Oil cooled only. I guess you are talking about that only, right? Just check the specification on the below official link:

My bad, I was referring to the 200NS engine which outputs more power than the older gen 220cc engine. When they could launch 3 variants, why not a fourth one with the 200NS engine (or the 200RS )?

Quite disappointed. Engine upgrade and a 6th gear would have done wonders to cruising ability. Anyways going to check Street 220 to see what's different - what they have done with handlebars and how it feels in the flesh. But my mind is already much closer to AS200 since RS200 is too flashy for myself.

Smart & Perfect Move:

The 200 NS engine on the Avenger never made any sense except for over enthusiastic bloggers & journos

The Budget cruiser market in India is currently not big enough to invest money & time in putting a new engine (200 cc, Liquid cooled) that too without increasing the Price tag significantly. For the common consumer who buys these products whether there is a Liquid Cooled or Air Cooled engine makes Absolutely no difference.

In fact for 90 to 99% of it's target consumer a 220 cc engine (naturally and without any logic) is more Powerful than a 200 cc enigine regardless of what the specs sheets suggest.

Bajaj being the only company to have a product in this niche market (budget cruisers) it is a good move to "try to" expand the appeal down to the masses with the 150 cc Variant and try to find out if there is a market for it.

Now whether there is really a market for a 150 cc cruiser among the 150 cc target commuter... once can debate but only time would reveal the answer.

Great pricing for the Indian market. This has elements of success for all growing / developing country markets and thus it seems that the product will be well accepted both in Indian as well as other markets.

Need to see the exhaust note, the advertisement claims a good engine note for cruise.

Good move Bajaj as Hero after parting away from Honda is not ready with anything new for the niche buyers.

Great pricing from Bajaj. The street version looks fresh, in fact the 150 cc version does look good for a single rider (on a budget) commuting to his office and back home.
Just wish the 220 cc also had a tachometer. Hope the seat is better now, the only reason for me rejecting this bike was I could not find the seating position comfortable for long runs, even as a pillion.

Absolutely. All my friend circle prefer the 220 engine than the NS. Even if you try to explain them the difference , they still hold P220 engine in high regards.

Exactly my thoughts. I also earlier rejected going for avenger for the same reason. It was very uncomfortable for even a medium built person. In comparison the old Yamaha enticer seat was much better. I think if bajaj can manage the marketing, there is a nice space for a 150 cc cruiser style bike.

Re: Bajaj Avenger 150 Street / 220 Street launched at INR 75,000 / 84,000

Today I went to Sai Service - Borivali, Mumbai to check out Street 220.

Went with a friend riding his Avenger 220 purposely because I wanted to feel whether there is any real difference in Street and Cruise versions in city traffic.

I'm 5'9 and Avenger's low riding position and handlebar position (to me it's uncomfortable) is pain to ride in city.

Points I noted after short test ride.

1 - The handle bar on Street 220 is shorter in hight and I found it much better than Avenger Cruise which is same as old Avenger 220.

2 - Seat high and cushion has been improved definitely even if it's just 15mm as per specifications.

3 - Alloy wheels look good.

4 - The mirrors on Street 220 are same as Old 220 (blackened on Steet 220) but those on Cruise 220 are little different. Mirror shape is same but mounting arm length has been increased in Cruise I think.

5 - In terms of riding position and handling, I felt much more comfortable on Street than both Cruise 220 and my friends 3 year old Avenger. Street definitely should be much easier to handle in city traffic than Cruise.

6 - Maybe because the bike was brand new, vibrations were much less than my friends 3 year old Avenger. Not sure Bajaj has done anything specific here.

7 - The Chrome side stand on Street 220 which looked odd in images on web actually isn't an eyesore when you look at bike up close.

Personally liked Street 220 over Cruise 220. I'm not much of a chrome fan. The Sales guy actually suggested me to test ride AS200 as well considering my height so tried same. Was very much comfortable on AS200 despite of it's sporty riding position.

On road price for Avenger Street / Cruise 220 is 97400 while AS200 comes at 108200.

Now it's heart vs brain decision. Heart loved Street 220 for styling while Brain is saying AS200 for technology. Hopefully we will sort it out soon.

Bajaj want to keep the price in check and just give you a basic cruiser experience.

Only competition will force Bajaj to upgrade the bike significantly.

Don't bother about new/improved engines until a cruiser comes from a different brand at the similar price.

Agreed fully. However, Bajaj cannot be blamed for exploring or exploiting a market segment where no other manufacturer wants to venture for whatever reason.

... for whatever reason.
That reason would be:

"How many would be willing to put investment in form of R&D, develop vendors, set up assembly lines... on a product/segment (i.e. small commuter cruisers) that so far has shown around 4,000-5,000 units per month (by Bajaj)"

Note: Please do not confuse Royal Enfield Models with Small Cruisers like the Avenger (and Enticer - once upon a time).

UM Motorcycles (the Renegade series) could be a potential competition for Avenger next year, however being an unpopular American brand, would be difficult for them to match Bajaj's stronghold in India.
