Royal Enfield is making a big play for the US market. They've just set up their headquarters in Milwaukee, down the road from that other maker of vintage-themed motorcycles.
They're also giving bikes to a few select builders to customize. And wisely, they've put Tony Prust of Analog Motorcycles on the list.

These customization have nothing to do with Royal Enfield of course. Other then you start with a RE bike, but just about everything is changed. Although I'm appreciative of anybody pouring a lot of time and energy into modifying a bike or a car, Im also very suspicious of the final product in terms of drivability, reliability and how long it will last. It looks good, but it ain't a Royal Enfield by any stretch of the imagination.

Have they really given bikes to these customization boys? I don't understand that either? Why would that be good for the brand RE?

I know several RE customization shops here in Delhi. Most of what they do tend to be just visual. So they put some nice paint and parts on it. Its nice to see someone pushing the envelope on more then visuals!

But the main difference being, Harley Davidson is an iconic homegrown brand for the Americans. Royal Enfield is a relative unknown, with none of that American heritage. People will tolerate problems with a Harley. They won't with a newbie.

The ONLY reason why Royal Enfield WILL succeed in the USA is because of the "vintage" tag. With that said, the problems that come along will be more an expectation and will add to its quirkiness, it will all be part of a package. I have seen and read countless RE stories online, mostly from America and they all seem to be blown away by the classic timepiece on offer with "modern" tech like efi. The charm that comes with the enfields hits home with Americans who love striding along the country roads and I feel the war vintage styling on our Enfields will carve their own niche amongst American hearts.

They do have everything to do with Royal Enfield. A lot of manufacturers, specially the ones in the neo-retro game, like Triumph, BMW, Harley and now even Yamaha, have been doing this for a while now. They give their bike to a talented and preferrably famous builder to showcase to the world the customising possibilities.
A motorcycle off the showroom is like a blank canvas to many. They want their rides to reflect their tastes and personality. So they don't mind taking a hammer and a chisel to their bikes, if not right away then definitely after some time. And that's the target audience, or most of it. And regarding long term reliability, well, most of the owners know their way around a tool box and prefer to get down and dirty with their rides.
"Other then you start with a RE bike, but just about everything is changed." - So that's the whole point of this idea!
